St. Elijah Monastery Toplița, Harghita

A peaceful stopover in Toplița

Where is it?

A tourist attraction in Toplita (Harghita county), situated on the main road, but quiet, is Toplița Monastery. It is also called St. Elijah Monastery. It is located on DN15 Bacau - Piatra Neamt - Toplita - Targu Mures - Turda, at the exit of Toplita on the right side. Some cars can park in front of the monastery gate.

About Toplița Monastery

The church of the monastery is made of spruce wood and was built in 1847 as the church of the village of Stanceni, at that time. Patriarch Miron Cristea brought at the beginning of the 20th century the church in Toplita with the desire to found a monastery in his homeland. It can be said that St. Elijah Monastery was founded in 1928. In 1995 a museum was opened in the courtyard of the monastery. Pilgrimages are organized here every year on July 20, St. Elijah's Day.

1. Entrance, alleys, courtyard, fountain

The monastery has two gates, both spectacular vaulted wooden gates. They each open onto paved alleys lined with trees. In the courtyard there are several large bells that can be admired. The courtyard is large, clean, manicured, with flowers, trees and shrubs, cheerful and restful places. From the fountain you can drink cold fresh water. In the courtyard is the bust of Miron Cristea.

2. Churches

At the end of one of the alleys is the old wooden church. The new church is located to the right of the alleys and looks very nice.

Conclusion

St. Elijah Monastery Toplița is a quiet and beautiful place of worship that I recommend a visit.

Other sights in Toplița are mesothermal waterfall or Urmanczy Castle.

All the best!
