Toplița mesothermal waterfall is located on the left bank of the Mures River, on Cascadei Street at number 9, which runs parallel to the railroad. From Miercurea Ciuc to the Toplița mesothermal waterfall the 93 km via DN12 can be covered by road in 1.5 hours. There is a train station in Toplița, 1 km from the waterfall. It can be visited at any time, free of charge.
The area is a geological and landscape nature reserve. It is a 10 meters high waterfall, but a special one, in that the water of the spring that flows from the Banffy hot springs and feeds the waterfall is thermal water. In Romania there are 2 waterfalls with thermal water, the other being the Clocota Waterfall in Geoagiu Băi. The Toplița mesothermal waterfall is unique in Romania due to the travertine deposits precipitated from the thermo-mineral water. The waterfall very rarely freezes, sometimes in winter the waterfall can offer spectacular pictures with huge icebergs.
The waterfall can be studied from many angles. The temperature of the water would be 27 degrees Celsius and the water would contain calcium carbonate, which permanently changes its appearance due to travertine deposits. The combination of waterfall and thermal water is not a common one.
What is travertine? We are talking about deposits (mineral precipitates) settled on vegetation.
