About the Amber Museum

Amber Museum, formerly the Amber Collection, is open in a traditional house. Here we'll learn about the cave veils from the Bottom of the Cave, about amber, about minerals, about Gheorghe Munteanu-Murgoci. We will see on display, among other things, amber jewelry and the largest nugget discovered so far.

Watch the movie about Amber Museum.

1. Traditional house

The Amber Museum is housed in a traditional house built in 1973-1974. It was inaugurated in 1980. At the beginning it was called the Amber Collection, and after it was enriched with exhibits it became Amber Museum. The house has 3 rooms on the ground floor and several upstairs.

2. Bottom Cave

Fundul Peșterii Cave is located nearby in the perimeter of Nucu, 15 km away, and is included in the route that goes through the rock settlements of the Luana Country. The cave is of particular scientific value due to the evidence of prehistoric art. There are inscriptions carved into the cave walls. The cave is protected from vandalism by a grill at the entrance. The cave was used as a dwelling and a place with a magical-religious role. The inscriptions depict prehistoric weapons, anthropomorphic figures, geometric figures, a ladder, letters and other strange signs. There is also evidence from the Bronze and Iron Ages and the feudal era that the cave was inhabited. The cave is also considered to be a fertility temple and has a vulvar shape. Several fossils of prehistoric animals are on display in the next room.

2. Amber

Amber is a fossil resin derived from some pine species, and is yellow, reddish-brown or greenish-black in color. It melts at 300 degrees Celsius. It may have well-preserved gaseous, earthy, liquid, insect, plant inclusions, some tens of millions of years old. Also called amber or succinite. Romanian amber is also known as rumanite. On display are both raw and processed forms of amber - jewelry. The museum is also home to the largest nugget discovered to date. It weighs 3.5 kg and is the museum's most valuable piece.

3. Gheorghe Munteanu-Murgoci

Gheorghe Munteanu-Murgoci was a Romanian geologist, mineralogist and pedologist, who together with Nicolae Iorga and Vasile Pârvan was one of the founders of the Institute of South-East European Studies in Bucharest. He was a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. A room is dedicated to him. Here we find out how resin was processed and what tools were used. We also see a wooden lathe used for polishing, as well as various lamps. A board shows the classification of minerals. A showcase displays some spectacular minerals.

4. Amber jewelry

I most liked the rare black amber jewelry, displayed in a showcase, and the amber necklaces. You can buy such jewelry in a shop outside the museum.
