The distance to Alba Iulia is 100 km and to Cluj-Napoca 80 km, both can be covered by road in 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Cluj-Napoca you can come via DN1, DJ103G, DN75. An alternative from Alba Iulia is via A10 to Turda, then DN75 to Lunca, then right to Poșaga de Jos, cross the spectacular Chei ale Poșăgii, then right again to Poșaga de Sus near Colțul lui Balmoș. From here to the entrance to the trail proper, where there are signs marking the two directions of the circuit, there are 500 meters.

Remarks: the circuit route is well marked, the branch to Coșul Boului is unmarked, a route with many lookout points, from which the charm of the Coșul Boului cave stands out

1. Belioarei spring (730 m) - branch (840 m, point 2 on the map)

30 minutes / about 1 km / easy / red dot

The intersection at the start, marked with red dot markers, informs us that the marked circuit takes 4-5 hours regardless of which way you go. Most tacklers approach the climb from the left. Due to the fact that we intended to include Coșul Boului in the route, it was wiser that we started from the right. The forest road is actually a dry valley that climbs smoothly through the forest. From time to time we admire the limestone escarpment of Scarița. We follow carefully where the marked path bends 90 degrees to the right, because from there we have to continue straight ahead along the dry valley. That is point 2 on the map.

2. Branch (840 m, point 2 on the map) - Coșul Boului Cave (1.230 m) - branch (1.100 m, point 4 on the map)

2-2.5 hours / about 2 km / very difficult / unmarked

Continue up the dry valley to 1,070 meters. Here we see a clump of logs and a red ribbon on the left. It's the place not to be missed as we make our way to the Coșul Boului cave. We climb quickly and emerge above the forest into a steep and rocky area. Be careful not to miss the orientation by the red ribbons, doubled by a few rock decoys. We came out too far to the right and came across a steep, smooth, rocky face, which was very difficult to cross. We picked up the unmarked path a little further up and continued to climb steeply with the cave constantly in view.

Goul Coșul Boului Cave has a large opening of 60 meters and a collapsed ceiling, making for spectacular photography and filming. It is also possible to abseil down through the cave ceiling for climbers with experience and equipment. From the mouth of the cave there are superb views of the peaks of the Trascău Mountains. We took a well deserved break here.

On the descent, I followed the steep trail carefully and didn't make any more wrong turns until I reached the dry valley at the logs. I continued up the wide, 200-meter, uphill dry valley to a glen with a trail junction, including the standard red dot circuit.

3. Ramificatie (1.100 m, point 4 on the map) - below Scărița Peak (1.384 m, point 7) - below Belioara Peak (1.350 m, point 8)

1.5-2 h / about 2 km / medium / red dot

We climb on the red point through the forest, at one point there is a stony passage, then we come out in an area with a view to the Pociovaliștei Valley and the Poșăgii Valley, where we rest. We are practically on the ridge. We encounter flowering junipers and rhododendron bushes. The path now holds the edge of the ridge, approaching the steep in a few places. It alternates between wooded and deforested areas. We pass under the Scărița peak, admire the Colțul lui Bleanț and turn off the ridge to the south for another superb viewpoint, a place for photos and rest. We can see the Trascăului Mountains and the Belioarei and Poșăgii valleys.

4. Under Belioara Peak (1.350 m, point 8) - Șesul Craiului - branch (1.280 m, point 10)

30 minutes / about 1.5 km / easy / red dot

We return to the ridge path, which descends gently through Șesul Craiului. To the right we see Mount Băișorii. In a saddle, there is another branch of trails, from where we will turn left, at sharp angles, on the same red point.

5. Branch (1,280 m, point 10) - La Măteoaie Spring (1,240 m, point 11) - La Stânci - Belioarei Spring (730 m)

2 hours / about 3 km / medium-difficult / red point

We start our descent, cross a forest, and come out at the La Măteoaie Spring. Here we enjoy the view of the steep again. Back into the forest and out again. Another difficult passage follows, down a rocky area where we carefully search for our plugs. We are The rocks. Later when we make another stop, we realize how steep we have descended. From here the descent is no problem, the red dot guides you to the end of the trail.

Conclusion

The Belioara Stairway is one of the most spectacular routes in the Apuseni Mountains. The circuit itself takes 4-5 hours. For a superbonus, called Basket of the Ox, add another 2 hours, but also a lot of caution and good grip.

Visit the Belioara Stairway! All the best!
