A small municipality starting to look better

About Zalău

Zalău is the county municipality of the county Sălaj. It is located in the north-west of Romania, in the Transylvania region, under the Meseș Mountains, at an altitude of 275 meters above sea level. It has an area of 90 square kilometers and a population of 56,000 inhabitants, of which 75% are Romanians and 15% are Hungarians. From the confessional point of view, 70% are Orthodox, 15% Reformed, 15% other religions. To Bucharest it is 550 km by road, which can be covered in 7 hours, and 380 km to Budapest.

History of Zală

The first archaeological evidence of human settlements on the territory of the municipality of Zalău dates back to 6,500 years, from the Neolithic period. After the conquest of Dacia by the Roman Emperor Trajan in 106, the northern border of the Roman Empire was through the Meses Mountains, north of this border still lived free Dacians. 10 km from Zalău is the Roman fortress of Porolissum. The first written record of Zalău dates back to 1210 in the "Gesta Hungarorum" or Chronicle of Anonymus. After Michael the Brave's victory at Guruslău in 1601, Zalau was to be governed according to its own rules, with real autonomy. Since 1968, Zalau has been the capital of the county of Sălaj. Throughout history, Zalăul was called Ziloc, Oppidum Zilah, Zila, Szilaj, Szilaju, Zilah. It seems that the origin of Zală's name is the Dacian word "zil", which means wine.

2. Iuliu Maniu Square

Iuliu Maniu Square is the central point where most tourist attractions of Zalău are concentrated. These objectives form Iuliu Maniu Square Complex. Here we find the Fountain with the Angels, the Wesselenyi Statuary Group, the Transylvania Building, the I. S. Bădescu County Library, the Iuliu Maniu Statue and on the other side of Mihai Viteazul Boulevard, which flanks the square, we also have the "Silvania" National College, the Lupoaicei Statue and the Town Hall.

The Angel Fountain, realized after 1854, is and was the meeting place of many locals. The fountain has a round shape and on its perimeter there are statues depicting four angels. On the side facing the Transylvania Building there is a drop below street level where there is a collecting basin.

Wesselenyi group of statues is set on a white marble-topped postern. The group of the bronze statue of the Hungarian baron Wesselenyi Miklos and the statue of the Romanian peasant Pop Samson represent a scene from the 1848 Revolution in which the peasant shows his gratitude to the baron for the abolition of serfdom.

Transylvania Building was built in the 19th century in eclectic style and dates from 1895. The most valuable room is the former ballroom and theater upstairs decorated with a Secessionist-style mural, which covers 300 square meters.

Building of the County Directorate for Culture is opposite the Transylvania Building. It was built around 1900. It also houses the I. S. Bădescu County Library.

Zalău is starting to look better. They are doing restorations, renovations, landscaping and it is not so sad and gray anymore. I really appreciated the tourist info center and liked the reformed church.
