About Piatra Neamț

Piatra Neamt is the county seat municipality of the county Neamț, located in the Moldavian region, in NE Romania, on the Bistrița river, at the confluence with the Cuejdi river. Piatra Neamt is located on DN15 Bacau - Turda, 70 km east of Bacau and 200 km west of Targu Mures. Piatra Neamt is situated at an average altitude of 345 m.a.s.l., covers 77 sq.k.m. and has about 85.000 inhabitants, about 90% are Orthodox Romanians.

We started in the neighborhood Pietricica, bypassing Pietricica Hill, a landmark of the city, on which we admired the colors of autumn. In the city there are many signposts placed at intersections directing you to the sights. We crossed the Cuejdi gorge and came to a bigger intersection, Mihail Kogalniceanu Square, where the statue of Kogalniceanu and the first museum we came across.

1. Museum of History and Archaeology

Museum of History and Archaeology it is located in a historical monument building and holds relics discovered in the subcarpathian area of Moldavia from the Eneolithic, Bronze Age, Geto-Dacian, Middle Ages, Modern and Contemporary eras, as well as a numismatic collection.

On Locotent Draghiescu Street, which flanks the museum, there is a shortcut, which exits in 9 Mai Boulevard, near the train station, after less than 1 km.

2. Railway station and cable car station

Railway station and cable car station are located in Piata Garii, in a T intersection. It is easy to identify the place by the route of the gondola. On a past visit we took a round-trip ride on the gondola, which offers a panoramic view of the city. The top station of the cable car is on Cozla Mountain.

From the train station we followed the itinerary Bistritei Street, parallel to the railroad, Independentei Street, Decebal Boulevard. Having then as a landmark the night installation of the stadium, after 2 km, we arrived at the cozy football arena in Piatra Neamt.

3. Ceahlăul Stadium

We surrounded the stadium on three sides, around which we saw parking lots but also training fields and athletes coming to the stadium.

4. Nicu Albu Park

From Eroilor street I changed direction to the right near the stadium on Stefan cel Mare street and I passed near the Forestry Technical College towards Cozla Zoological Park or Nicu Albu Public Gardenwhich we found animalless and sad. 1.2 kilometers from the stadium.

I admired 2 sculptures representing a Dacian and a Dacian face.

The blue lane tourist marker climbs past this park towards Cozla Peakat the top station of the cableway.

5. Town Hall

Stefan cel Mare Street leads us, slowly but surely, after 400 meters, to the most attractive area of Piatra Neamt. We will not enter the road overpass but we will stay above it having on the left side Town Hall.

6. Museum of Eneolithic Cucuteni Art

Address: 3 Stefan cel Mare Street

Open: Tuesday - Sunday from 10 am - 6 pm

Cucuteni Museum of Eneolithic Art belongs to the Museum of History and Archaeology of the city and is housed in a beautiful historic building. Opened in 2005, the museum is unique in Europe, and holds the richest Cucuteni collection with 300 pieces in the "treasure" category of national heritage.

It's one of the museums not to be missed.

7. Princely Court

We're on the perimeter Domnești Court between Stefan cel Mare street in the upper part and Republicii Boulevard in the lower part where there is also Youth Park. In the park there is a monument dedicated to heroes, but also statue of Stephen the Great. On the right is the old hotel Ceahlaul.

From below I admire Medieval enclosure wall of the Citadel (17th century), which climbs several variants in Liberty Square, a plateau where you can find several top tourist attractions, including the Cucuteni Museum, already presented.

8. Domnească Church

Domnească Church is dedicated to the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. and is also called Church of St. John Domnesc. It was part of the ensemble of the Royal Court of Piatra. It was built during the reign of Stephen the Great, in 1498. It is 26 meters long and 9 meters wide. Remarkable is the rich decoration of enameled ceramics preserved almost intact. It is declared a historical monument.

Inside the church is the Pisania of the Bell Tower, which reads: "I Stefan Voievod, by the mercy of God, ruler of the Land of Moldavia, built this bell tower with his lady Maria, daughter of Radu Voievod and their beloved son Bogdan Voievod, in the year 7007 and his reign 43rd year of his reign, October 28."

9. Tower of Stephen the Great

In the middle of the upper plateau, called the Liberty Square, sits a semet, but closed, under renovation, Tower of Stephen the Great.

Stefan's Tower is also a historical monument. It was built in 1499. It belongs to the parish of St. John Domnesc. It is part of the medieval complex Princely Court. Today is symbol of Piatra Neamț municipality.

10. Museum of Ethnography

Open: Tuesday - Sunday from 10 am - 6 pm

Also on the plateau of Liberty Square is Museum of Ethnography. It shows aspects of the traditional peasant dwellings of the Bistritei Valley, the Romanian folk costume specific to the area and the main crafts of the subcarpathian region of Moldova, such as weaving, peeling, woodworking, animal husbandry. It is a historical monument.

The house was built in 1924 and served as the house of the headmaster of the 1st school for boys "Lascar Catargi". The architectural style is neo-Romanesque. The Ethnographic Museum has been housed here since 1980.

I was glad to see many visitors to this museum as well.

11. Art Museum

Open: Tuesday - Sunday from 10 am - 6 pm

Following the Liberty Square, on the same side is Art Museum. This building was erected in 1930 and housed School number 1 for boys "Lascar Catargi". Later it was an archaeological museum, and since 1980 it has housed the Art Museum. It is also a historical monument.

The museum presents collections of painting, graphics, sculpture and tapestry by Romanian artists.

12. Princely Court Museum. The Cellars.

Address: 4 Stefan cel Mare Street

The spaces located near the Petru Rares College present three-dimensional materials and documents related to the Princely Court of Piatra Neamt, attested on April 20, 1491. The museum also includes the two cellars of the Princely Houses.

13. Youth Theater

Address: square Stefan cel Mare 1

To get to Youth Theater down the stairs to the Center. The two-storey building, with attic and basement, is in the neo-Romanesque architectural style of the interwar period, the year of completion being 1935. The architect was Droz, the contractor the same Carol Zanni as for most of the superb museums on the plateau. It is a historic monument.

We leave the most attractive area of the city, past the hotel, on the left, entering Petru Rares street.

14. Museum of Natural Sciences

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm

Museum of Natural Sciences operates in the building donated by historian Iulian Antonescu. It holds a unique collection of fossil fishes, as well as other rare exhibits of geology, flora and fauna from Neamt Mountains yes Ceahlău.

From the theater we walked 600 meters.

We leave the central area of the city following Petru Rares street and then Mihai Viteazul, passing over the Cuejdi river and near the Church of St. Mucenic St. Mina. We keep heading towards Roman until the exit of the city, where after 2,5 km, on the left side we meet ...

15. Multipurpose Hall

With a capacity of 4,000 seats Multipurpose Hall hosts indoor sports, events, concerts, competitions.

I personally liked the perimeter in Princely Court where most of the city's sights are concentrated Piatra Neamt. I enjoyed the fascinating Cucuteni culture by visiting Museum of Eneolithic Art and I would have liked to have hiked up to Cozla.
