Unique in Europe

Location

Museum of Eneolithic Art or Cucuteni Museum in Piatra Neamt is located in the Domnesti Curtii area, on Stefan cel Mare Street 3, and is a must see in the city at the foot of Pietricicai.

About the museum building

The spectacular building was erected between 1928-1930 by the entrepreneur Carol Zani, after a project by the architect Roger Bolomey to be the headquarters of the "Petrodava" Bank. Later, after nationalization, the building housed the Neamt branch of the National Bank of Romania. Since June 24, 2005, the building is the headquarters of the Museum of Eneolithic Cucuteni Art, as well as the headquarters of the International Research Center of Cucuteni Culture. The museum building is declared historical monument. The Cucuteni Museum is part of the Museum of History and Archaeology Piatra Neamt.

About the museum

After a small hallway you enter the main room on the ground floor. Here on the left is the ticket office where you can get or buy information, leaflets, souvenirs, books. The museum is not guided. Cucuteni Museum is unique in Europe, being the owner of the richest and most varied collection of Cucuteni art. The permanent exhibition presents about 300 pieces from the "treasure" category of national cultural heritage. In addition, temporary exhibitions and thematic scientific activities are organized.

1. Ground floor

Cucutcenian decorative art is dominated by symmetry principle. Symmetry is obtained either by repeating one or more decorative motifs on the surface of the object, or by segmenting the decorated surface into two or four fields. Parallel lines and painted bands are used for segmentation. In the side showcases on the ground floor, medium-sized facsinating objects are exhibited, which are carefully displayed and maintained.

Considered to be the first civilization in Europe, Cucuteni-Tripolian originated and developed in territories belonging today to Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The name was assigned by archaeologists after the name of the Cucuteni villages in Iasi County, Romania, and Trypillia in Ukraine, near Kiev, where in the 19th century the now famous painted pottery and burnt clay statues, which have become a symbol of this ancient population, were discovered. The Eneolithic is the prehistoric period in which basic occupations such as plant cultivation, animal husbandry, hunting, hunting and gathering, as well as domestic crafts such as metallurgy, pottery, weaving and spinning, developed.

In the center of the exhibition hall are presented several larger vessels.

2. 1st floor

On the first floor of the museum there are figurines or figurative art objects. Cucutcenian zoomorphic plastic art consists of figurines and vases representing animals glued on the bodies of containers. Some paintings on the decoration of the vases represent even felines, snakes, birds or other animals. Each object on display is worth appreciating and studying for a few moments.
