Where is it, when is it open, how much does it cost?

The Pitesti Prison Memorial can be found at Negru Vodă Street 30 in Pitesti. The museum can be visited from Thursday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. The full entry ticket costs 20 lei. Children between 12 and 18 pay half, and children under 12 have access only to the area called the Children’s Museum of Communism.

The Pitesti Prison Memorial is a unique museum located right in the space of the former prison in Pitesti, where the Pitesti Phenomenon or Experiment took place during Romania’s communist period. In the prison cells there are exhibitions, works of art, a bookstore and a chapel.

1. Ground floor 1

To the left of the entrance, on the ground floor, there are rooms where pages from the communist history of Romania are presented. We read about prominent personalities of the democratic world, such as Iuliu Maniu, about the historical parties, the liberal and the peasant, the occupation of Romania by the Red Army, about collectivization and the establishment of communism. To the right of the entrance is the Museum of Communism for Children.

2. The basement

The Pitesti Phenomenon Exhibition is presented in the basement. The Pitesti phenomenon was an experiment in the re-education of prisoners consisting in the psychological destruction of the individual. The conditions in the cells, the bathroom and the torture methods used are shown.

3. The floor

Upstairs is the Correctional Department. There were cells for prisoners deprived of liberty for less than 7 years to those imprisoned for more than 25 years or life. The representatives of the resistance movement imprisoned in Pitesti are remembered.
