Salina Ocnele Mari, Valcea

Salina Ocnele Mari - The opposite of hospitality

Where is it? When to visit?

The address on Google Maps is str. Pinilor, nr. 27 bis, Ocnele Mari, Valcea county. Ocnele Mari is 10 km from Ramnicu Valcea via DN67. From Bucharest it is 185 km, which takes 2.5 hours on the E81. On the main road there are visible road signs leading you to the salina.

There are 3 parking lots. The first and the smallest is before the bridge in front of some shops and is free. The second is after the bridge, on the left. It's very spacious and costs 10 lei. An employee (I wanted to call him nene, but nene is a polite name in Moldova) makes vehement signs to convince you to park at the "paid" one, and is even cheeky if you don't listen to him, as if we were on his estate. This is the first sign of hospitality received! The third parking lot is on the right, after the bridge, it's free and it's for coaches.

Ocnele Mari Salina is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

About Salina Ocnele Mari

A large information panel provides a wealth of interesting, even useful, information. Otherwise, you should consider that in the salt is a constant temperature of 13 - 15 degrees Celsius, all year round, which in summer seems cool, even chilly when you come from 30 degrees. It is therefore recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants.

The altitude at which the saline is located is 226 mdm.

The difference in levels between the entrance and the base of the saltworks is -29 meters. The length of the access gallery is 1.8 km and access is by salt buses only.

The visitable area measures 4 hectares, and the height of the exploited rooms 8 meters.

Good luck!

1. Getting ready to enter

I took a walk through the parking lot and around, towards the entrance of the salt marsh, in order to photograph the entrance of the buses in the salt marsh. No less than 3 filters of employees, again trying to control my words, asked me about my health, what am I doing there? One yelled at me and behaved deplorably. It doesn't even matter that I'm giving them free publicity, but the idea of behaving aggressively, obtrusively, insulting to tourists, is outrageous. That was the second sign of hospitality!

We headed to the ticket office, where you can buy in addition to entrance tickets and some salt products. You can also buy other souvenirs, toys, etc. at the nearby huts.

I bought tickets. This is where I got my third helping of hospitality, although I would have to call it thievery more accurately. Under the pretext that a group of children can only have 2 adult companions who pay for a discounted ticket, I had to pay for the whole ticket.

Not to mention that we were urged to cram into the bus that was waiting to leave even though it was full. Whatever...

Salina Ocnele Mari is a polluted saline due to the fact that access was made for years with polluting buses.

2. The beautiful part

There are several leisure options inside the saline. There are go-karts, volleyball, mini-football, basketball, table tennis and billiard tables, mini-golf, a large inflatable slide area, a cinema, a wine cellar (now closed), a church where regular services are held. There are resting places, swings, a cart and other amenities. A shop offers salt products, and a kiosk where game accessories are rented/rented activities are paid for, also has juice/water.

Children and all those who want to do some exercise have a choice. The grounds and leisure areas are in good condition.

There was once a tray pusher here. Sometimes different exhibitions are organized.

Conclusion

In Ocnele Mari Salina you can spend a few hours exercising and inhaling the salty air, a natural treatment for respiratory diseases. I have visited this saline many times and I think that for years it has not presented anything new, on the contrary.

The children will surely have a good time in the saline, and if they are in a big group, even more so.

A big minus, but a very big minus, is the way customers are treated.

All the best!
