Măldărești Museum Complex, Valcea

Cula Duca and Cula Greceanu from Măldărești

Where is the Măldărești Museum Complex? When can you visit? How much does it cost?

Măldărești Museum Complex is located on DJ 676H, which is formed from DN 65C, in the locality of Valcea Măldărești, road linking the city Horezu of Craiova. You can visit between 10 am and 6 pm, except Mondays. We parked for free at the entrance gate to the complex.

1. Start of the visit

We went through the big high gate and entered a huge courtyard where we saw a guide with another group of tourists. She told us to wait a bit and she would take us. The system was to pick up the visitors on the go when they passed through certain points of the circuit route that followed the 3 objectives Măldărești Museum ComplexCula Duca, Duca Memorial House and Cula Greceanu. Until then, we've also got some greedy, greedy, greedy, greedy, greedy dogs to keep us in mind.

2. Court

The courtyard was manicured and surrounded by thick walls like the defensive walls of fortresses. To the left of the courtyard was one of the cule, a white, square, two-story building, the Cula Duca. On the right another smaller building, the Duca Memorial House. The access through the courtyard to the sights was through alleys laid out with stone slabs. Really, beautiful, clean and colorful with lots of green landscape.

In the courtyard, for decorative purposes, we also found spherical trovanti, some spherical stone spires, like cannonballs, which I will tell you about in another report from Trovan Museum, which you can read about here https://mytravel.express/obiective-mte/muzeul-trovantilor-costesti-valcea/ .

3. I. Gh. Duca

We entered the smaller building, where the I. Gh. Duca. The rooms are very cool, simply painted, white, and loaded with inventory objects specific to the Oltenesti culelor, including paintings. As a rule, between two rooms, in the wall and half on one side, half on the other, there are terracotta stoves, the cahlele being ornamented. Ghida shows us several rooms and salons. The exhibition shows a parlor, study and bedroom, all with original furniture. I. Gh. Duca was a magistrate, and politically a prominent liberal, becoming a minister.

4. Church

Then we exit the main gate, pass the parking lot and follow the road a little to the left without reaching the beautiful old church that can be seen on the first curve.

5. Cula Greceanu

On the right Cula Greceanu. Cula Greceanu was built in the 16th century. Then Nan Paharnicul builds a defense tower, and his nephew, Tudor Maldar, continues the work in the eighteenth century resulting in what we can find here today.

And this cul-de-sac is 2 stories and sits in a very expansive yard. Se vede ca intretinerea exterioară a zidurilor lasa de dorit și este pacat. Some hope of funds I understand there would be.

In one room we saw painted members of the Greceanu family. A steep, but solid staircase leads to the upper level through a kind of eye in the ceiling.

There is also a simpler and normal way to go up, an ordinary wide staircase. Upstairs you reach an open space with flower pots and wide views of the wooded hills. Special outfits worn long ago are also on display. The large dowry chest and old Oltenesti carpets and ceramics specific to the Horezu area could not be missing.

In the courtyard we took a short break on low wooden benches and swung in an old rocking chair. We also spotted a summer kitchen where we would have enjoyed eating if such an option had been offered.

6. Cula Duke

Cula Duke dates back to the 19th century, the year 1827 being marked on the outside masonry by the descendants of the Maldarestilor. In 1910 this cell was bought by the politician I. Gh. Duca, who also built the adjacent house, which today is the memorial house.

Conclusions

We liked the visit and the guide and we wish that these cule will not degrade as it happened with many others in the Oltenia area. A 1-hour visit to Măldărești is welcome and you can combine it with a visit to the potters' shops on the main road in Horezu and/or a visit to the Trovantilor Museum https://mytravel.express/obiective-mte/muzeul-trovantilor-costesti-valcea/. Or why not the Monastery of a Wood https://mytravel.express/obiective-mte/manastirea-dintr-un-lemn-francesti-valcea/.

All the best!
