Baroque Complex in Oradea, Bihor

An area worth a visit

Where and how much?

The Baroque Complex of Oradea can be accessed from 2 sides: from Dacia Avenue, at the intersection with Museum Street and Petőfi Sandór Park, and from Șirul Canonicilor Street. Visiting the cathedral, the garden and partially the palace are free of charge.

About the Baroque Complex

The Baroque complex comprises the Roman Catholic Bishop's Palace or Baroque Palace, the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Statue of St. Laszlo and the Statue of Ferenc Szaniszló, the Roman Catholic Bishop's Park and the Magnolia Park and the Canons' Row.

1. The Canonical Series

The Canons' Row is located on the street of the same name between numbers 7 - 25. The complex of buildings here was erected in 1751 at the request of Bishop Pál Forgárch, 4 years after the cathedral and palace were built. The houses erected in this series, originally intended for the church leaders, are attached to each other, and on the street side they are extended by a vaulted corridor supported on equidistantly placed plinths.

2. Roman Catholic Cathedral

We head towards the Roman-Catholic Cathedral by entering through the small gate at 2 Șirul Canonicilor Street, where the official address is, and which leads to the side entrance on the long side of the church. The cathedral is an imposing building, painted yellow on the outside. The Basilica of the Elevation of the Virgin Mary is the cathedral of the Diocese of Oradea and is the largest Baroque architectural monument in Romania. It was built in the 18th century. At the entrance are several funerary monuments from the 15th - 16th centuries, erected in Gothic and Renaissance style. The dome's fresco depicts the "Heavenly Triumph of Christ". The altars convey sobriety and are typical of the Baroque style. The main altar is made of Carrara marble in the Renaissance style. The painting in the altar depicts "The Ascension of the Virgin Mary". The organ was given by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and dates from 1780. In the church are the relics of St. Ladislaus and the tomb of King Stephen II of Hungary.

4. Palace of the Roman-Catholic Episcopate or Baroque Palace

The Roman-Catholic Bishop's Palace was built in the mid-18th century by the Austrian architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt in the Baroque style, at the request of Bishop Adam Patachich. Oradea was a popular place of pilgrimage due to the humanist movement and the cult of St. Ladislaus. In the palace can be visited 9 painted halls and 2 monumental corridors where the collections of classical ecclesiastical art are exhibited: the Sissi Hall, the Hall of St. Louis Bertrand, the Renaissance Hall, the Hall of Monumental Paintings, the Great Painted Hall, the Small Painted Hall, the Moses Hall, the Treasure and the Hall of Liturgical Textiles. It is also called the palace with 365 windows.

5. Roman Catholic Bishop's Park and Magnolia Park

A landscaped garden surrounds the bishop's palace. Part of it is in Baroque style. The inner courtyard of the bishop's palace, with steps inside its letter U shape, is called the Court of Honor (cour d'honneur). On the other side of the palace the planted shrubs are arranged in the shape of a pound, reminiscent of the heyday of classical music.
