Water Castle in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți

A unique museum and a great view

Where is it and when can you visit?

Water Castle in Drobeta-Turnu Severin is an emblematic tourist attraction for this city. It is located on Adrian Street number 113 at the intersection with Crisan Street, in the middle of a roundabout, which makes it even more prominent. It is easy to see from a distance. The Water Castle can be visited any day of the week between 9 and 19.

About the Water Castle in Drobeta-Turnu Severin

Water supply was one of the major concerns in the town. In 1907 the municipal administration recognized the possibility of supplying water from the Danube. The works followed the project of the engineer Elie Radu. Three years later the inauguration took place in the presence of many officials. The purpose of the castle was to store water at a sufficient height to be distributed by hiodrostatic pressure. It was pumped into the suspended reservoir by a pumping station.

The Water Castle is 42 meters high. At the top are some turrets with pointed conical roofs.

During the First World War, when work on this construction was interrupted, it served as an observation point for German troops.

1. General

You can visit the Water Tower. Tickets can be purchased in the circular hall on the ground floor. There is also an exhibition space here, but we will come back to that at the end. In the tower is organized an interesting museum with a unique presentation system. You can visit the 2nd and 3rd floors and the balcony. There is also an elevator access if you don't want or can't climb the spiral stairs.

3. 3rd floor

Upstairs we learn in a way never before known about the former island of Ada Kaleh, which has its honorary place of remeber. It shows the occupations of the Turks who populated the island voluntarily flooded when the reservoir of Iron Gates I was built, the population being then displaced. There is no lack of nice information about coffee, shit, cigarettes, cigarettes, drinks, sweets produced and sold by the Turks, who had on the island privileged fiscal conditions.

4. Balcony

At the top, around the castle is a narrow circular balcony that offers a superb 360-degree panorama. In the space on that level (the 4th level in fact), information about the purpose and construction of the tower is presented in a new way.

Then we go out on the balcony. We also admire the colorful roof of the castle, its towers and especially the neighborhoods of the city, the Danube and the Serbian shore all from the heights. Superb!

5. Go to

I went back down the stairs, as I had come up, to the base. Here, on the ground floor, there are a few other objects on display. The museum looks excellent. I would have liked to find an information leaflet about this fascinating sight, but maybe they will reprint it.
