About Salina Turda

Turda Salina invites you to discover the most spectacular underground architecture in the world modeled by man. It has a sci-fi look.

The salt deposits here formed 13.5 million years ago in a sea in a very warm climate. The sediment layer pressed down the 400-meter-thick salt layer and formed a 1,200-meter salt mushroom. There is archaeological evidence of salt mining at Durgău-Turda from the pre-Roman period, from the 2nd century B.C. The first documentary evidence of salt mining in the area dates back to the 11th century, when the salt mines of Turda are mentioned. In 1932 the exploitation of salt from Turda was stopped. Until then there were at Salina Turda the Iosif mine, Rudolf mine, Terezia mine, Ghizela mine and Anton mine.

Salina Turda was reopened in 1992 for tourist and spa purposes. You can visit the mines Iosif, Rudolf, Ghizela and Terezia, the crivacul, the altar, the Rich Men's Staircase. Treatment rooms have been set up, as well as leisure facilities such as areas for sports activities, boat rides on the underground lake and all in a futuristic architectural setting.

Salt from Salina Turda could provide the world's salt needs for 60 years. Salina Turda is on the list historical monuments in Cluj county.

1. Franz Josef Gallery

The Franz Josef Gallery is the old underground entrance gate. It was built in the 19th century to transport salt to the surface, first with horse-drawn sacks, later with horse-drawn wagons. In World War II it was used as a shelter and later as a cheese store. The Joseph mine hearth is 115 meters deep.

2. The Crivacul and the extraction well hall

Crivacul is a salt mining machine. Today's crivac was built in 1881 and is the only one in Europe still in place. The screen is actually the extraction machine. It is a vertical-shaft winch fitted with four drive arms to which horses were harnessed, which by moving in a circular motion around the machine. A rope pulled over the pulleys reached into the mine hearth where the sacks of salt were. Full sacks were brought to the upper level and empty ones lowered to be filled.

3. The rich man's ladder and the appeal room

In the Hall of Appeals there were miners coming in and out of the Rudolf Mine. In the middle of the hall we notice Rich Rich Ladder. It is said that after Emperor Franz Josef descended this staircase, no miner was allowed to use it. The staircase, made of fir-wood, provides access to the Theresia and Rudolf mines and is the oldest wooden structure in the salt works. In a recess in the salt is the Altar, the miners' place of prayer.
