Address and access

Television tower in Stuttgart is a landmark for the capital of Baden - Wuerttemberg. Because of its height and the fact that it is perched on the top of a hill, it can be recognized from a distance.

The address is Jahnstrasse 120. The base of the tower is 483 meters above sea level. But still how do you get from the city center, from the Hauptbahnhof (Hauptbahnhof station) to the tower? By car you can travel 6 km in 15 minutes via Wagenburgtunnel, Planckstrasse, Pischekstrasse. By public transportation there are several options. I opted for the U7 (or U15, both possibilities exist). The U-Bahn ride took 15 minutes, another 15 minutes I had to walk. The destination station is called Ruhbank (Fernsehturm). Once you get off the U-Bahn you cross to the huge wooded park at the top of the hill. You can't get lost, as there are signposts everywhere for access by car, bicycle or on foot. You can also walk the whole distance on foot. The route can be covered in an hour, the distance is 4 km.

Visiting program

Visiting the TV tower is possible according to the following program:

-otherwise between 9 and 23.

About Stuttgart Television Tower

The builder of the television tower is the engineer Fritz Leonhardt. He had the idea to build the world's first television tower. This year marks the 60th anniversary of inauguration in February 1956 of the television tower in Stuttgart. Construction took only 20 months.

The 217 meters Stuttgart's TV tower has long been in the top 10 tallest buildings in the world. To get a more faithful impression of what this height represents, I'll point out the heights of other great buildings on our planet: Statue of Liberty with pedestal (New York, USA) - 93 m, Koeln Dome (Germany) - 157 m, Emipre State Building (New York, USA) - 381 m. After 2000 in Asia in particular, many other buildings with incredible heights have been erected. What about the top 3: One World Trade Center (New York, USA) - 541 m, Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) - 601 m, Burj Khalifa (Dubai, UAE) - 828 m (the tallest building on Earth)?

The tower weighs 3000 tons and its foundation another 1500 tons.

1. Television tower

Fernsehturm Stuttgart or Stuttgart Television Tower is the place, which offers the best view of Stuttgart and its surroundings. Around the tower's imposing vertical pillar, at the top of the tower is built a circular 4-level "basket" where the "offices" are located. Above it are two viewing platforms.

The TV Tower is a favorite place for children, young and old alike. In its immediate vicinity there is a children's playground, and the whole area is forested, offering many possibilities for walking and relaxing. There are both access roads for vehicles, as well as landscaped paths through the forest and trails for cyclists. As my visit took place during the European Football Championship, next to the tower there was an open space with wooden tables and benches with 2 giant TV screens where fans could watch the matches on TV. A few meters away is a sports base, which also includes the stadium of the Stuttgarter Kickers, the city's second most valuable team.

At the base of the tower is the Leonhardts garden restaurant, of course expensive, being located next to this landmark in Germany's second most expensive city. Both at the beginning and at the end of your visit to the tower, you have to go through its shop where you can buy souvenirs. You can't miss the exorbitant prices of many of them here either.

2. platforms

The two platforms from where you can admire the superb panorama, dominated by much, much green, are located at 150 meters and 153 meters from the base of the tower. If the visibility is good, you can admire the Black Forest Mountains, where the Danube springs, looking across the whole Swabian Lands, as I had the chance to do that evening when I climbed the tower. Access to the first platform is by one of the two fast elevators, with attendant. The trip lasts only 36 seconds, the elevator reaching 5 m/s. In the elevator the platform where we stop is called floor 9. As we go up (and obviously also down), a display in the elevator dynamically indicates how high we are.

Upstairs you are in another world. I first take a tour of the big platform, the level where the elevator took me. Just admiring. Then I go to the upper level, the second platform. Access is via a metal ladder and is only allowed when it is not frozen. The upper platform is smaller in diameter. On its edge are inscribed landmarks and sights to be admired all around, as well as some calculated straight-line distances to various destinations on all continents. We identified the airport, of course Stuttgart with its center, but also Hohenneuffen Castle, we saw the Black Forest Mountains and we discovered the signpost to ... Bucharest ... 1400 km. There were binoculars installed on the platform with which you could search or zoom in on desired landmarks in the visual spectrum.

Above the 2 platforms, up to the maximum height of the tower, there is an antenna. On the platform there is also a Panorama Café.
