Schönbrunn Zoo is the world's oldest zoo, opened by Franz Stephan von Lothringen in 1752. At the same time among the most modern and well-equipped artificial habitats in the world, the zoo's special appeal stems from its imperial charm. It has been named the best zoo in Europe six times in a row. It is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, with the imperial summer residence at Schönbrunn Palace.

And for these categories of creatures there are several areas where you can encounter them. Crocodiles and turtles, as well as exotic, colorful fish, are attractions for many visitors.
The big cats, or mau big cats, are kept in specially designed enclosures that give them an environment as close to the real thing as possible. Lions and tigers are, of course, the stars.
These huge mammals are found in a park all to themselves and can be seen from about 20 meters away.
And giraffes have a dedicated park. Admire them as they eat or approach the fence. With their long necks, they're certainly the tallest mammals.
It's very crowded here. It's the polar zone. Several species of penguins represented by many specimens delight the eyes of those present. The polar bear pavilion is another very popular spot with tourists. Here I saw a superb polar bear, in my opinion the most beautiful animal in the zoo.
Of course the monkeys couldn't be missing. Different species of mischievous monkeys are climbing around. The fascinatingly colored orang-utan is on call.
In black and white, with his round ears and beady eyes, he wanders around his large cage as everyone watches.
The zoo is home to over 6,000 animals from over 500 species. I therefore do not propose to cover them all in this article. I also list reindeer, pelicans, zebras, buffalo, deer and many others. You can watch the animals at feeding time. Impressive is the widespread initiative of the garden's management to raise funds for the care, feeding and treatment of the animals through donations, with donors becoming godparents to the various animals, their names being mentioned on thank you plaques.
Schönbrunn Zoo is not just a relaxing walk among the animals, but an educational and exciting experience for all ages. With an impressive history, a stunning natural setting and a fascinating diversity of species, this destination is a must-see for anyone coming to Vienna. If you're looking for a special day where nature and discovery come together, Schönbrunn Zoo awaits you with open arms!
All the best!
