Prater, Vienna, Austria

The symbol of fun in Vienna

Where, when, how much?

Prater is at 1020 Vienna, that's what it's called. Better yet, enter Prater on Ggogle or Waze and you'll find out how to get here. Easy access is by metro line U1 or U2 or by train to Praterstern station. Prater Amusement Park is open 24 hours a day, but the different attractions in the park operate at different times, mostly between 9am-24pm from March to October. Admission to the park is free, with each attraction having its own posted prices.

About Prater

Prater is first and foremost a public park in Vienna, covering 6 square kilometers. The first documentary evidence dates back to 1162. It was originally the hunting ground of Emperor Joseph II, who turned it into a recreation park. The name Prater comes from 'pratum' which means pasture. In German it is called Wiener Prater. The current amusement park has over 250 attractions.

Most attractions are aimed at children, but also adults. I list the Ringelspiel merry-go-rounds, the Minidrom cars, the express train, the children's Ferris wheel, Disneyland, go-karts, gaming tables, Aqua Gaudi - a mountain rousse plunging into the water, the castles of horror, the Tussaud's museum, rolling on Rollerball, trampolines, water ride and many more.

3. Big Wheel (Riesenrad)

The emblem of the Prater is the Riesenrad, the famous Ferris Wheel. It attracts the most curious onlookers, sometimes forming queues waiting for tickets and to get on the wheel. Here are some of the technical details of this highlight: 65 m high, 61 m in diameter, weighing 245 tons for the construction alone and 430 tons including the rotating carriages. Each car seats about 8 people. The view from the top over the illuminated park and the city is wonderful. At the end you can print a professional photo as a souvenir.
