The statue was erected in 1887 by the Italian sculptor Ettori Ferrari in neoclassical style. An identical replica is in Sulmona, Italy. The statue of Ovid is made of bronze and depicts the great Roman poet Publius Ovidius Ovidius Naso (43 BC - 17 AD). The statue stands on a white marble plinth on which you can read the poet's verses.

To the southeast of Ovidiu Square, in the immediate vicinity, on 1 Crângului Street, is the Great Mosque or Carol Mosque, whose minaret can be seen spectacularly from the square and from other directions. It is a Muslim place of worship.
From Ovidiu Square to the northeast, from Marcus Aurelius Street, the view opens towards the Tourist Port, and to the south the shipyard and Tomis Port, the gateway to the Black Sea.
Ovidiu Square with the statue of Ovid is one of the most visited sights in Constanța. The area is mostly pedestrianized and dotted with terraces, restaurants, cafes. The old architecture and the statue of the poet give the place a bohemian feel.
