About Sibiu Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum in Sibiu is part of the Brukenthal National Museum. The tour takes you in turn to the permanent exhibition, the temporary exhibition and then the courtyard. Attractions include the mineralogy exhibition and the dinosaur garden. The permanent exhibitions include the sectors: evolution of the living world, ecosystems, paleontology and mineralogy.

The museum was founded in 1849 by some Saxon intellectuals from the Ardean Society of Natural Sciences and inaugurated in 1895 when it moved into this late Renaissance-style building. The building has a basement, ground floor and first floor. In the courtyard there is a garden with dinosaurs.

1. Mineralogy Sector

Mineralogy also has an aesthetic branch. It refers to minerals with an attractive appearance and coloring. Well-known are 'mine flowers' or 'stone flowers'. Crystals such as pink rhodochrosite, cubic galenite, tetrahedral sphalerite, prismatic gypsum, prismatic quartz or antimonite forming hedgehog shapes are the most spectacular minerals. Native minerals such as gold and copper are also on display. The mineralogical sector is arranged on either side of the staircases leading to the first floor.

2. Paleontology Sector

The paleontological sector is organized on the museum's first floor. The 1.8-meter-high complete skeleton of an ancestor of the zebra is an eye-catcher. Several fossils are also on display.

The skeletal remains found in the area show that species such as the woolly rhinoceros, mammoth and cave bear (Ursus spaeleus) lived here long ago.

3. Evolution of the living world

Back to the ground floor. In the section dedicated to the evolution of the living world, we discover creatures from the simplest organisms to birds. Invertebrates such as jellyfish, worms, corals, crustaceans, then vertebrates from fish and reptiles to birds such as ostriches. There are also two dioramas, one depicting the fauna and flora of the Danube Delta, the other showing a bank with bird nests. Birds of all sizes take up a generous amount of space.

4. Ecosystems

Other dioramas show different ecosystems in which we identify specific fauna and flora. We first go through the ecosystems of Romania. We start in the plains with the birds and mammals of this area, enter the forest to see the fox, the deer, the wolf, the wild boar and reach the alpine void where we find the bear, the black goat, the eagle and the capercaillie. We move to other geographical areas to travel through the rainforest, even reaching the Arctic and the Australian continent.

5. Colors of nature

Colors of Nature is a temporary exhibition. Enjoy brightly colored butterflies, exotic birds and beetles, spectacular seashells and colorful rocks. I liked a piece of limestone with fossil snails.

6. Dinosaur garden

In the courtyard of the museum, in front of the entrance to the museum building, there are busts of scientists. The rest of the courtyard can be called the dinosaur garden. We meet treiceratops, brachiosaurus, utahraptor.

Conclusion

The Museum of Natural History in Sibiu is a popular one according to Google. Although it can be visited in only 30 - 60 minutes, I think it could do with a more obvious structuring and modern, interactive presentation solutions. It is still an interesting museum.
