Medieval Fortress of Targu Mures is located on Avram Iancu Street 2 in the county seat of Mureș County. There is another entrance from the Citadel Boulevard. Another side of the citadel is in the area of Bernády György Square, easily accessible by foot from the central area. The Citadel is open daily from 8 am to 9 pm for walks inside the ensemble, and access to the exhibition spaces is generally from 10 am to 6 pm, depending on the season and events. Access to the courtyard is free of charge. Some exhibitions or events may have a modest entrance fee, displayed on site.

About the Medieval Fortress of Targu Mures

Medieval Fortress of Targu Mures is one of the most important historical symbols of the city and a representative example of Transylvanian defensive architecture. Built in the 16th-17th centuries on the site of an old fortification, the fortress was erected to protect the local community during periods of political and military instability.

The complex consists of an enclosure with seven bastions, each once built and maintained by a craft guild. The massive brick walls, imposing gateway and well-preserved ramparts give visitors an authentic picture of medieval life in Transylvania.

1. The Gate Bastion

The Gate Bastion is one of the most representative elements of the Medieval Fortress of Târgu Mureș, being the main access point to the fortification. Imposing and well-proportioned, the bastion was intended to control the entrance to the fortress and to protect the most vulnerable area in case of attack.

Built in the late Renaissance style, the Gate Bastion impresses with its massive arches, vaulted gate and stacked chambers once used for guard and surveillance. Above the entrance were the rooms of the guards, where documents and weapons were kept, and the narrow openings in the walls allowed effective defense in critical moments.

Today, the Bastion of the Gate is one of the most photographed places in the fortress and offers visitors an authentic glimpse of how urban defense was organized in Transylvania in the 16th-17th centuries. Restored and harmoniously integrated into the historical ensemble, the bastion welcomes tourists with a special medieval atmosphere, marking the entrance into a space steeped in history.

2. Bastion of the Flanners, Bastion of the Dogars, Small Bastion

Bastion of the Flanners is one of the most solid bastions of the Medieval Fortress of Târgu Mureș, built and maintained by the furriers' guild - craftsmen skilled in leather processing. Its main role was to defend one of the vulnerable sides of the fortress, which is why the walls were reinforced with firing platforms and spaces for storing weapons. Today the bastion stands out for its massive shape and architectural details characteristic of the period.

Dogarilor Bastion, built and administered by the dogars' guild, protected the northern part of the enclosure. The craftsmen who looked after it were known for their barrel-making, which was essential in the trade of the time, and their influence is also reflected in the strategic importance of the bastion. With its compact plan and thick walls, the Doge's Bastion remains one of the best-preserved structures of the complex.

Small Bastion is the smallest of the citadel's bastions, but it had a clear role in guarding the fortification's corners and linking the patrol routes. Its more modest size did not diminish its importance, as it was used for observation and quick defensive maneuvers. By its positioning, the Small Bastion complemented the defense system and provided visibility of the surrounding area.

3. Tanners' Bastion, Tailors' Bastion, Butchers' Bastion

Bastion of the Tanners it was maintained by the guild of craftsmen who worked the hides. Erected to protect the south-western part of the fortress, the bastion stands out for its thick walls and firing platforms, making it a strategic point of defense. Today, visitors can see its robust architecture and well-preserved structure, which reveal how the citadel was prepared for attack.

Tailors' Bastion was the defense sector associated with the tailors' guild, which took care of the maintenance of the city's armor and military clothing. This bastion was intended to supervise and control access to the eastern part of the citadel, while also providing storage space for weapons and defensive materials. Its architecture combines military functionality with Renaissance elements.

Butchers' Bastion, located on the northwest side, was kept and maintained by the butchers' guild. In addition to its defensive role, the bastion reflected the importance of the guild in the economic life of the medieval town. Its thick walls and strategic position allowed for the effective defense of the citadel and complemented the system of fortifications, ensuring continuity of surveillance between neighboring bastions.

4. The Reformed Church in the Citadel and the fountain

Reformed Church of the Medieval Fortress of Targu Mures is one of the oldest and most important religious buildings of the city, erected in the 16th century in late Gothic style. It is both a place of worship and a symbol of the history of the Reformed community in Transylvania.
