Medieval Fortress of Severin, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți

An unmissable strategic and tourist attraction

Where is it, when can you visit?

To get to The medieval fortress of Severin, follow the signs in Drobeta Turnu Severin. It is located on Dunarea Boulevard, it is written on Google Maps, but on the map at the bottom entrance is actually Smardan Street which surrounds 2 sides of the General Dragalina Park. Do not come through the park, diagonally, even if it is shorter, because it looks bad and unsafe access. The medieval fortress can be visited daily from 9 am to 20 pm.

About the medieval fortress of Severin

The first documentary attestation of Severin is dated 1233. The first stone enclosure of the fortress, 90 x 45 square meters, rectangular with slightly arched walls, is attributed to the Johannite knights brought here by the Hungarian king Bela IV. It has two inner and two outer towers and two side towers. The corner towers had both floors and basement. The walls are 2 meters wide, 8 meters high and made of river stone mixed with lime mortar.

1. Discover the citadel!

At the bottom of the fortress is a small lake. Next to it there is an access that goes up one of the outer walls of the fortress, going around it from the East to the North, where the ticket office is located and where you can get some information. Here you can also study the plan of the citadel. In several places you can read information about the fortress.

2. Enclosure walls

We pass through two thick enclosure walls and a fountain. In order to strengthen the fortification, in the 15th century, under the rule of the Hungarian king Sigismund of Luxembourg, a second enclosure wall was built on 3 sides, 6-7 meters from the first one. In the same century the Teutonic knights were brought to defend the fortress. In 1435, the Wallachian ruler Vlad Vlad the Dracul attacked the fortress and conquered it for 1 year. After regaining the fortress, Sigismund appoints Iancu de Hunedoara as the ban of Severin, who will fortify and rebuild the fortress.

3. Methods of torture

In the center of the fortress is a labyrinth and elements and methods of torture are shown. We also see battle equipment and the Teutonic logo.

4. Museum

In the 16th century, the fortress was conquered by the Ottomans. Also in the middle of the citadel is a small museum displaying centuries-old outfits, armor, weapons and household items.

5. Belvedere platform

The most sought-after place is the belvedere platform, overlooking the Danube and the ships that cross it, the railroad, the Serbian shore.

6. Walk in the citadel

I really liked the medieval fortress of Severin which is renovated, well maintained and enhanced from a tourist perspective.
