About Curciu Evangelical Fortified Church

Fortified Evangelical Church Curciu was built in the 15th century of stone and brick. It has rich Gothic architecture. It was originally a Catholic church, but with the Lutheran Reformation, its rite was changed to Evangelical-Lutheran. It was a defensive construction with a defensive wall.

In the video about the church you can watch here.

1. Church exterior

We pass through the well-kept courtyard under the arch of the Leaning Tower and the beautiful church appears in our field of vision. Gothic architectural elements are numerous and can be seen in the windows, bas-reliefs and portals. The entrance to the church is richly ornamented with specific elements such as parallel ribs, on which there are several figures. The churchyard is surrounded by the enclosure wall, part of the original fortification. An entrance can also be seen in this wall, but it is closed.

2. Inside the church

At the entrance to the church we see the ropes of the three bells, still in use today. There are also several crates of past communities with their documents. We step into the main hall of the church, where the pews are arranged. Decoration work in the 20th century has revealed 16th-century murals. The altar, organ and pulpit date from the 19th century; the organ is also functional. In the middle is the christel. The Gothic arches join in nodes, where specific figures are depicted in stone.

3. The tower of the Slăninii

We return to the courtyard and head towards the Sausage Tower. We climb its stairs and in the room at the top of the tower we see the beams and nails where the bacon used to be hung for storage, with the name of the owner.
