About Ana Rohia Monastery

Ana Rohia Monastery, known simply as Rohia Monastery, is one of the most important monastic settlements in Maramureș, famous both for its tranquility and for the spiritual and cultural role it plays in the region. It was founded in 1923 by the priest Nicolae Gherman, in memory of his daughter Ana, who died prematurely.

Situated on the „Vineyard Hill”, the monastery is surrounded by dense beech and oak forests, offering a unique natural setting, ideal for meditation and reflection. The monastery complex includes the main church, built in the traditional Maramureresse style, as well as other outbuildings, dormitories and an impressive library housing thousands of volumes.

A special aspect of the monastery is its connection with Nicolae Steinhardt, writer, essayist and monk, who lived here in the last years of his life. His chapel can still be visited today and is a point of attraction for those interested in culture and spirituality.

Today, Rohia Monastery attracts both pilgrims and tourists eager to discover the authentic beauty of Maramureș and to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
