Deva Tourist Guide

Let's visit Deva together

About Deva

Deva is the county seat municipality of the county Hunedoara. Yes, Hunedoara county does not have its seat in Hunedoara, but in Deva! The city of Deva is located on the left bank of the Mures river, at the foot of the Poiana Rusca and Zarand Mountains. In Hungarian it is called Déva, in German Diemrich.

Average altitude 187 mdm

The city is near the A1 highway, it is crossed by DN7 Bucharest - Nadlac - border with Hungary, an important transit artery, and is the end of DN76 Deva - Oradea.

The city of Deva covers about 50 square kilometers and has about 60,000 inhabitants, decreasing in population. About 80% of the inhabitants are Orthodox Romanians.

History Deva

There are several theories about the toponymy of the word Deva: either from the ancient Dacian "dava" meaning fortress, or from the Romans from Castrum Deva, or from the Slavic "deva" meaning maiden.

1269 - first documentary attestation under the name Castro Deva

13th century - the fortress will be the residence of the Transylvanian rulers Roland Borsa and Ladislau Kan

14th century - the citadel passes to King Carl Robert of Anjou

Hunedoara County and Țara Hațegului - a very attractive tourist area

Here are just a few destinations that are worth visiting, I can say from my own experience: Corvinilor Castle; Deva, Colt, Malaiesti Fortresses; Retezat, Gradistea Muncelului National Parks; Simeria Arboretum; Dinosaurs Geopark; Sarmizegetusa, Blidaru, Costesti, Piatra Rosie Fortresses; Prislop, Densus, Strei Churches; Arsenal Park; Gold Museum. Long list and I can still add many, many more... So do not bypass this area!

1. National Tourist Information and Promotion Center

The right place to start a visit in Deva is National Center for Tourist Information and Promotion, where there is also a big parking lot, with payment, but cheap. I was glad I found this center open, but as tourist documentation it was sketchy at least to the degree of information that interests me.

The address is Strada Stadion, right next to the bottom station of the gondola and the stadium.

We take a few shots of the parking lot with the stadium, Aqualand, the info center, the gondola station (under capital works along with its route, soon to operate 2 cabins with a capacity doubled to 30 passengers) and of course with the Citadel of Deva. Near the station are insirate busts of some golden coaches and athletes of Romanian gymnastics, knowing that Deva was the national training center of the national gymnastics team

2. Cetate Park

The route per pedes measures 2 km, it is easy, through the forest, supposedly marked, but rather poor in the context that several variants are detached and some are closed. Ascent time 30 - 45 minutes, descent 20 - 30 minutes. Level difference 200 m. The route takes us past Cetate Park at the foot of the slope where we find a signpost that we can follow up the hill.

The view of the fortress from below is superb, even though I'm in the process of renovating it.

3. Towards Devei Fortress

You can go up to Deva Citadel with cableway that leaves from near the Tourist Info Center. But I invite you for a short hike to the fortress. There are about 3 variants or combinations of them going up. They start near Citadel Park. Poteca takes us to Gate I.

4. Devei Fortress

Opening hours: daily between 9:00 and 20:30

Free access

You can read a detailed presentation on https://mytravel.express/obiective-mte/cetatea-deva/.

Poteca takes us to Gate I. From here we can climb up some steep stairs that take us to the upper area, from where we can climb up to the staircase at the top Fortress Hill. We can choose different ways to visit the Devei Citadel. Leaning against the wall we admire the wide view over the city or the surrounding villages. We can go down a path that crosses a short cave. Devei Fortress is the most visited tourist attraction in Deva.

5. Bethlen Castle / Magna Curia / Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization

Address is Strada 1 Decembrie 39

We go down the Cetate Hill to the Cetate Park, we take a few pictures of the park, cross it and arrive in front of Bethlen Castle in Deva. It is the oldest historical monument (16th century), which is preserved in the city. Its name comes from the Prince of Transylvania Bethlen (17th century), who donated the domain of Deva to his wife. The architecture has Renaissance and Baroque influences. The building houses the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization.

Since 1934 Magna Curia Castle becomes the seat of the County Museum. Today it bears the above mentioned name.

6. Reformed Church

Address is 2 Lucian Blaga Street

The old medieval church decayed in the 19th century. In its place, in the immediate vicinity of the old one, the new one in neo-Romanesque style was built in Union Square, with an impressive bell tower with one of the biggest bells in the country.

7. Synagogue

The address is Gheorghe Baritiu Street.

The synagogue or Great Temple was built in the 19th century. It is easily recognizable from nearby.

8. "Dr. Petru Groza" Memorial House

The address is Avram Iancu Street.

It's the building where lived Dr. Petru Groza, the former Prime Minister. It looks quite gray-communist.

9. St. Hierarch Nicholas Episcopal Cathedral

Address is Strada Avram Iancu 1

It is Orthodox and built in neo-Byzantine style. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas.

10. Franciscan Monastery

Address is Strada Progresului 6

It was built in the 17th century by the Franciscan Order with the support of the Catholics. It is dedicated to St. Mary.

I closed the loop at CNIPT Deva, from where I had the idea to drive across the city to the Bejan area where I saw a hot and a cold one. The cold one refers to the Bejan Forest which I do not recommend the access being made on an unpaved road through a neighborhood of gypsies, a muddy and unwelcoming area. About the warm one, read below.

11. Bejan Park

Address is Mihai Eminescu Street

And now we get in the car. 5 kilometers to Bejan Park.

It is the largest park in Deva, covering 2.4 ha. A green oasis has been built here, a beautiful and civilized and clean park, which includes playgrounds, alleys, benches and a zoo with some of our animals. I liked it very much.

12. Statues of Trajan and Decebal

The address is 6 Unirii Square and Victoriei Square respectively

The other 2 interesting sights of Deva are the great statues of Decebal and Traian.

Ratings

Deva is known because of Deva's Citadel, which can be seen from afar from Lunca Mures from the highway. By far the attraction of Devei is the fortress, which I'm sure will look very nice after the renovation works are finished.
