Șugău Cave, Giurge Mountains

Șugău Cave. Deep in the Giurge Mountains.

Access

From Miercurea Ciuc, the county seat of Harghita county, there are 54 km of road that can be traveled in a little more than 1 hour via E578 or DN12 to Voșlobeni, where the signpost directs you to the right towards the cave. I came from the opposite direction, from Toplița (HR), also via DN12, 50 km, same travel time. If you come by train, you will get off at the Voșlobeni train station, from where you have another 6 km to the cave.

About Giurge Mountains

Giurge Mountains (in Hungarian Gyergyói-havasok) belong to the Eastern Carpathian mountain range. Their highest peaks are Sipos Peak at 1,568 meters above sea level and Prișca Peak at 1,545 meters above sea level. They are bordered to the north by the Călimani Mountains, to the northeast by the Bilbor and Borsec Depressions and the Bistriței Mountains, to the south by the Hășmaș Mountains and to the west by the Hășmașului Depression. The main ridge of the Giurge Mountains, marked with a red stripe, stretches between Pasul Răchițiș in the north and Piciorul Niergheș in the south.

Șugău Cave (Súgó Barlang) was formed in the Yippos mountain. The surrounding area of 19 hectares is a nature reserve. It is 1 km long and comprises the Main Gallery, the Preaplin Arm, and the Active Part. The Main Gallery is 300 meters long, half of which can be visited.

It is open daily from 10am to 3pm, except Mondays. Admission costs 10 lei.

1. To the cave

There is a wooden shelter next to the parking lot. Climb up on the blue stripe marking, through the forest, with a few steps and wooden handrails in places. We arrive at the guides' hut where the entrance fee is cash only. At the time of my visit there were 2 young Hungarian guides working as volunteer guides. We climb 200 meters to the tourist entrance. Here we receive flashlights and listen to a short instruction.

2. In the cave

Șugău Cave has 4 floors and 3 entrances. We are invited to the upper floor of the cave, the only one accessible to tourists and this one only partially. The entrance is at 1.060 meters above sea level. On a panel we see a map of the cave with Edmund's Hall, the Pagoda Hall, the Hall of Wonder - the Candelabra, the Hall of Pillars, the Hall of the Pillars, the Hall of the Butzdugans, the Enchanted World and the Tower. To the left of the entrance, in the cave, we caught a bat hanging from the ceiling. From the tourist trail, there are several galleries where only cavers are allowed. The cave has many stalactites, stalagmites, columns and aragonite and calcite crystals. In the reserve grows the lady's slipper, a plant protected by law. Bats live in the cave.

Conclusion

The Șugău Cave is a beautiful cave in terms of its richness in specific concreted forms. Unfortunately the visitable area is not very large. The visit, including access to/from the guides' hut, takes 1 hour. The layout is minimal, lacking signs with the names of the formations or rooms. Guiding has potential for improvement.

All the best!
