Krimml Waterfalls, Hohe Tauern, Austria

The highest chained waterfall in Europe

Where is Krimml Waterfalls and how to get there?

The nearest major city is Innsbruck. Access to the waterfalls is via A12 and B165 for about 100 km. We camped at Seeboden 200 km away, access via A10. Krimml Waterfalls is in Hohe Tauern National Park.

About Krimml Waterfalls

European record

380 m measures the cumulative fall of the chain of cascades, which is a European record and holds the 5th place in the world. The waterfall was formed over 3 large steps.

In addition to record-breaking values, the waterfall stands out for the high flow rate of the Krimml River as it plunges into the precipices where the huge waterfall was formed.

1. Unterer Achenfall

From the parking lot follow the signs on the so-called Wasserfallweg - Waterfall Trail.

At the beginning the trail is flat, easy and in 10 minutes leads you to the waterfall at the bottom - Unterer Achenfall..

Here the view takes your breath away and the lower waterfall offers a rainbow first and a fine refreshing shower as a bonus. Some, more comfortable, stop here fascinated by the scenery.

2. Mittlerer Achenfall

However, the organizers of the visitor park have laid out a trail that climbs in wide serpentines to no less than 15 viewpoints located on the left side of the river at the waterfalls, at different elevations. Until the middle waterfall - Mittlerer Achenfall - you have to cover 1 - 1,5 hours, it depends very much on how much time you want to allocate to each point and obviously to photos and videos. For a more sporty descent you need 30 minutes, for a normal one 1 hour.

In total the chained waterfalls have 3 large steps, which are called Unterer Achenfall, Mittlerer Achenfall and Oberer Achenfall. I didn't have time to climb the upper waterfall.

Up on the hill, above the waterfall in the middle is a chalet with restaurant and terrace.
There is also the possibility to drive up to this point by car on a route that runs predominantly on the other side, but does not offer the exceptional views of the Wasserfallweg.

Conclusion

Krimml Waterfalls are fascinating. Nowhere have I seen more rainbows per square meter than here. At almost every waterfall we admired another rainbow, at some we had double rainbows. Reserve at least 3 hours to visit this impressive sight.
