Hoia Forest, Cluj Hills

Through the mysterious Hoia forest

Access

We consider the starting point of the hike is the Hoia forest at Grigorescu Reformed Church and the terminus point on Someșului Micnearby.

About hiking

This is a route designed on the Hoia hill, aiming to reach the top of this hill, cross the mysterious Hoia forest and descend into the Baciului Gorge, then back into the Hoia forest to the Via Mariae road. The route has many variations due to the multitude of paths in the forest, all of them unmarked.

1. Grigorescu Reformed Church - top of Hoia Hill (507 m)

We follow the Donath street, then the Uliului street and we climb the Alexandru Donici street, which ends with a few dozen steps. From here we continue left on a forest road to the top of Hoia Hill

2. Hoia Hill Peak - Hoia Forest - Baciului Gorges

30-40 min / 2.5 km / easy

The forest road follows the edge of the forest for a portion offering wide views of Cluj-Napoca and the commune of Floresti. At some point we have to go deep into the forest. On the map you can find the route chosen by me, but you can choose many other variants. The route is unmarked, but with the map orientation is possible without big problems. The carpet of leaves and autumn colors give a special charm to the walk.

3. Baciului Gorges - pond

10 min / 0.6 km / easy

We crossed the street Cheile Baciului and we go parallel to it, to the left, through the existing corridors in the thickets of thrushes. On the right is a wall of earth, in fact are the Baciului Gorges. Much said keys. Eventually the footpath comes out into a wide glade, again at the Cheile Baciului road, next to a pond.

4. Iaz - Hoia Forest - Via Mariae

30-90 min / 1.3 km / medium

There follows a sustained ascent into the Hoia Forest, also on unmarked trails, orientation being a little more difficult than at the first crossing, due to the many branches and paths completely covered with leaves. After the highest elevation point on the trail, we descend briefly into the Via Mariae forest road.

5. Via Mariae - Sars Little

60-70 min / 3.5 km / easy

The Via Mariae road is marked with a very rare blue M. We admire Floresti and Cluj. We intersect for a short stretch the road we had taken a few hours earlier. The road extends with the Rue Uliului, from where we descend down a steep shortcut to the streets along the banks of the Someș Mic.

Conclusion

The proposed route is one through the Hoia forest on unmarked, lightly trodden paths. It requires map reading skills.
