About Vaslui

Vaslui is the county seat municipality of Vaslui county, located in the East of the country, in Moldova. Vaslui can be reached on DN24 Tisita (VN) – Barlad – Vaslui – Iasi – Sculeni, the border with the Republic of Moldova, DN2F Vaslui – Bacau and on DN15D Vaslui – Piatra Neamt. There are 325 km to Bucharest, which can be covered by road in 4.5 – 5 hours. Vaslui County also has an important border point with the Republic of Moldova at Albita, located 73 km from the municipality of Vaslui. The city of Vaslui is located at an altitude of 170 meters above sea level, stretches over 70 square kilometers and has about 55,000 inhabitants, of which about 99% are Romanian, and in terms of religious affiliation, 90% are Orthodox Christians. The first documentary attestation is from the year 1375

1. Municipal Center for Tourist Information and Promotion

The address is Stefan cel Mare street 51A, at the intersection with Frunzelor street. Hours: Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The center is very welcoming, rich in information, maps, books, promotional materials. It was a pleasant surprise and the best starting point in the tour of the city’s sights.

2. Civic Square / Statue of Stephen the Great

Not even 300 m, to the north, on St. Stefan cel Mare, we find the Civic Square. Here we meet a pedestrian plateau, the building of the Administrative Palace with the Prefecture and the City Hall, but also the Statue of Stephen the Great, depicted with a sword in his hand. The statue is placed on a travertine plinth and is made of bronze. It is the symbol of the city. The square is flanked by the House of Culture of the Trade Unions. This is also the Center of Vaslui.

3. Stephen the Great Museum

Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday 9-17

We continue behind the Administrative Palace, where after 300 meters, you will find the Stefan cel Mare County Museum. It was inaugurated in 1975 and includes the departments of archeology and history, medieval and contemporary history, ethnography, contemporary plastic art, as well as a “Constantin Tanase” humor salon, dedicated to the memory of the founder of the Romanian revue theater. And in this area there is also a pedestrian space, the continuation of the one in the Civic Square. We picture the statue of Mihai Eminescu and some rest areas.

4. The Independence Monument

It is a monument made by the artist Jiga. Here is Piata Independentei and the end of Mihail Kogalniceanu street. The monument is made of bronze with a travertine plinth and represents scenes from the War of Independence from 1877 on both sides.

5. Palace of Justice

The address is in Piata Independentei. Piata Independentei is also called Piata Palatului de Justice because here is the Palace of Justice, an imposing, one-story building, built at the end of the 19th century. This is where the Vaslui Court operates.

6. The statue of Mihail Kogălniceanu

On Mihail Kogalniceanu street, 500 meters from the Court, on the left side is the bronze statue of Mihail Kogalniceanu and the eponymous high school.

7. Monument to fallen heroes in the Second World War

On the same street, but opposite, the mentioned monument is located.

8. Copou Park in Vaslui

Copou Park is located 500 meters from the high school, at the end of Mihail Kogalniceanu street, which is slightly uphill. Yes. There is a Copou in Vaslui as well, not only in Iasi. It is a well-kept public garden. The main alley is guarded by the statues of Mihail Kogalniceanu, Alecu Russo, Mihai Eminescu and Ion Creanga. There is also a side entrance to the park from Veteran Turcanu We retreat, having several options, to the southern side of Stefan cel Mare street, in the intersection known as Crucea Garii. Travel distance 2.5 km. Here is the Financial Guard.

9. (The Ruler Court) Curtea Domnească

The address is Stefan cel Mare street 58. We follow Stefan cel mare street to the north, on the right side. We immediately arrive at the Royal Court Ensemble, which includes the “Beheading of Saint John the Baptist” Church, emblematic of Vaslui.lematica pentru Vaslui.

The restoration of the ensemble is in an advanced stage. The church dates from the reign of Stephen the Great. A part of the old princely residence was found here, the archaeological excavations brought to the surface wall fragments from the 15th century, ceramics and decorative objects. We continue on the main artery Stefan cel Mare and pass by the “Mihai Eminescu” Secondary School, in front of which is the bust of the greatest Romanian poet, Mihai Eminescu.

10. Mavrocordat House

Next is an imposing building, from the end of the 19th century, which I found in ruins. It was erected by Gheorghe Mavrocordat.

11. Statue of Victoria

After this, we pose the bronze statue of Victoria, the creation of the sculptor Popovici. Besides this, an alley leads to the entrance to the municipal stadium.

12. The monument of the fallen heroes of Vaslui for the whole nation

Next comes the bronze monument mentioned above, located in front of the Army House. A little higher, on the left sidewalk, we recognize the Tourist Info Center, where we started the Vasluia journey. We end the walk through Vaslui, where else but at the statue of Stefan the Great. He left in the evening after a pleasant tour through the Moldavian city.

Assessments, conclusions

I was left with a pleasant impression about Vaslui, about the tourist information center and I believe that if the promotion of the city continues, more visitors will come to Vaslui, to lands full of history.
