2. Steam Locomotive Museum

Address: Calea Timisoarei 4I

The Steam Locomotive Museum can be visited at any time, being located in an open space in the CFR Museum Park. It is undoubtedly the highlight of the city’s sights. I’m glad that on this visit I found the locomotives on display in a very presentable condition, and the explanatory panels next to each of them offer information and curiosities worth reading. The museum boasts that it is the largest open-air technical museum in Europe. In 1872, the first steam locomotive from Southeast Europe was manufactured, which is called Resita and is exhibited together with 14 other steam locomotives. In 1922, the Resita Locomotive Factory was built, and in 1972, this spectacular museum was opened.

3. 1 Decembrie Square and the Funicular

The next stop is worth making in the center. Here you can find the City Hall, the old shopping center and some tourist landmarks to check off. The Multipurpose Hall 1 Decembrie 1918 can be found at street number 5. It is said to be one of the modern multipurpose halls in our country, with 2 tribunes and almost 2,000 seats. It is managed by the municipality and from the outside at least it looks dull. I have such a fear that due to the decline of indoor sports, we would find more and more rust…. You can park for a fee next to the hall.

The Nokia Monument

That sounds interesting! It does not appear on any map. The first time I heard about him, it struck me and made me curious. What is it actually? The term monument can be misleading. In the first one, I can’t find him down the street, but up the street! Yes! It has the shape of a mobile phone, is about 2 meters high and is placed anchored to the balcony of the block in the square, on the pedestrian street that leads to the Customs Bridge.

The funicular car carried a lot of ore during its life, which is now over. It remains a symbol of Resita and you can’t help but notice it if you look up. A part of it passes close to the center, over the Barzava river. I found out that a project would have been activated to give it another destination, one related to spending free time, acoplo high above the city, to be transformed into a pedestrian walkway and bike path. Interesting! Why not?

4. The West Theater and the Customs Bridge

The West Theater is a beautiful building located on the pedestrian street that connects the center of the market with the Customs Bridge. I hope it works for as long as possible. On past visits I saw her in a better light.

The Customs Bridge, located in Libertatii street, is a pedestrian bridge, once a road bridge, over the Barzava river, and very busy. It is another benchmark construction of the “Fire Fortress”, a once thriving city due to the steel industry. It is also called the Welded Bridge. I really like this arched bridge. Across the bridge is a small park – Carasana Park – and…

Personal impressions and ratings

Sad! I remember Reșiţa in the 80s, a large industrial city. Resita’s factories, functional before the Second World War, had become known across the border. Here were the biggest rolling mills in the country, the forge, the steel foundry, the locomotive factory… Oh, the time! Today the wind is blowing… and the dominant color is gray. It is a pity that the tourist potential of the city of Reșita and the area is not exploited, Resita being the access road to the Semenic Mountains. The Steam Locomotive Museum is by far Resita’s current emblem.

All the best!
