Iasi travel guide

The story of Iasi

Introduction

I had the opportunity to visit Iasi many times and it's been about 40 years since my first impression of the capital of Moldova. Situated on hills, with a remarkable historical center, with many, many tourist attractions, Iasi was and is remarkable. Am lipsit din Iasi vreo 5 ani si am ramas de-a dreptul impresionat de cum arata orasul! Un mare mare bravo to those responsible for the current look of Iași.

About Iași

Iași was the capital of Moldavia between 1564 - 1859, then one of the two capitals of the United Principalities between 1859 - 1862 after the Mica Unirea and capital of the Kingdom of Romania in 1916 - 1918 (when Bucharest was occupied by the Germans). Many commercial arteries have passed through Iasi over the centuries.

Today, Iași is the county seat municipality of the county Iași. The town is located in the Campia Moldovei, on the Bahlui river. The border with the Republic of Moldova is only 20 km to the east and 110 km to Chisinau. There are 2 recognized universities in Iasi: Alexandru Ipan Cuza University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and many others. Iași is the largest economic center in Moldova, the most present industries being metallurgy and medicine. Iași is an important road and railroad hub. The most important roads crossing Iasi are: E58 which comes from Austria through Halmeu - Baia Mare - Baia Mare - Bistrita - Suceava - Botosani - Iasi and exits to the Republic of Moldova through Sculeni continuing to Ukraine and Russia, DN24 starts from DN2 in Tișița and goes to Sculeni - border with the Republic of Moldova, DN28 connects Roman - Iasi - Albița - border with the Republic of Moldova. The city has 4 train stations, of which 2 main ones: Iași and Nicolina and an international airport.

Area: 94 kmp; population: ca. 300.000 inhabitants; altitude: 60 mdm; nationalities: 89% Romanians, others under 5% each; religions: 84% Orthodox, others under 5% each.

History of Iasi

Archaeological remains found in the area testify to life here during the Roman Empire.

Iași developed from a village in antiquity to a market town after the 7th century.

  • 1408 - first mention of Iasi in a commercial act issued by the Moldavian ruler Alexandru cel Bun
  • 15th century - Alexander the Good settles here the Princely Court and the city develops
  • 1564 - becomes the capital of Moldavia at the decision of the ruler Alexandru Lapusneanu and will have this status until 1859
  • 16th century - craftsmen and merchants appear, including foreigners
  • 17th century - under the reign of Vasile Lupu, trade flourishes and the first Romanian-language school, the first printing house and the first printed book appear here. Towards the end of this century, the town is plundered and burned several times, the population retreating to the hills
  • 1859 - 1862 - one of the two capitals of the United Principalities of the Romanian Lands and Moldavia after the Great Union
  • 1916 - 1918 - provisionally Romania's capital after Bucharest was conquered
  • 1941 - the Iasi pogrom against the Jews, launched by Antonescu
  • 1944 - Iasi was conquered by Soviet forces
  • The 20th century - the city flourished and became a strong university center, the best known being the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy
