About Zadar

City Zadar is the most important town in the canton of Zadar. It is located in western Croatia and is a port on the Adriatic Sea, therefore it is at sea level 0. It covers 200 sq km and has a population of 75,000 inhabitants, of which 90% are Croatians of the Catholic religion. In Greek it is called Idassa (Ίδασσα), in ancient Latin Iader, in medieval Latin Diadora, and in Dalmatian Jadra (pronounced Zadra).

History Zadar

The Liburnians first settled in Zadar in the 9th century B.C. The first attestation dates back to 384 B.C. In 48 B.C. the Romans founded the settlement of Iulia Iader. Today, Zadar is the historical center of Dalmatia and the main political, cultural and commercial center of the region. Zadar is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia, and the Zadar fortifications, as part of the Venetian defense system in the 16th-17th centuries, are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

1. City Bridge, New Gate (Nova Vrata)

Gradski Most is City Bridge built across a small bay of the Adriatic Sea, where ships and boats of all sizes dock. It leads to Nova Vrata, i.e. New gate, which is one of the gates into the old town, under the city wall. Above the wall, it is a superb vantage point overlooking the City Bridge and the bay.

2. Museum of Illusions

Museum of Illusions is one of the attractions of Zadar. The Museum of Illusions in Zadar can be divided into 3 types of experiences. We meet illusion rooms, installations and images. In the illusion chambers we discover the tilted chamber, the Vortex tunnel and the inverted chamber. In installations, I list the chair Beuchet, cloning table and head on a plate. The images offer holograms and optical illusions.

3. City wall, gates

There is a promenade, which offers a wide view of the harbor, the bay, the narrow old streets of the historic center or the one below, on the waterfront. In Citadel Wall are built near the New Gate and Gate of St. Roh, Gate of St. Krsevan, Gate of St. Dimitri and Chain gate.

4. Lighthouse

Lighthouse in Zadar is in the north-western part of the port, on the peninsula of the historical center. It is in the vicinity of the harbor of large sea ships and the famous place, called Sun Salutation.

5. Electric cars

At the end of the street with road access, at the roundabout between the lighthouse and the Sun Salutation, electric vans await tourists for a 30-minute ride in the historic center of Zadar, with a few stops at the most attractive spots. Prices are negotiable.

6. Sun Salutation

Sun Salutation or Monument to the Sun is a monument dedicated to the sun. Here 300 laminated glass panels are embedded in the stone cliff paving. This construction is circular in shape with a diameter of 22 meters. Under the glass are photovoltaic solar modules. The architect is Nikola Nikola Bašić. We have been enjoying this place since 2008. Thousands of tourists gather here to admire the fascinating sunsets. It is the most famous place on the peninsula.

7. Sea Organ

Sea Organ is right next to Sun Salutation. The Sea Organ is an experimental musical instrument whose sounds are produced by the movement of sea waves under large stone slabs. Nikola Bašić is the architect of the work, which opened in 2005. The sound of the sea in this place is an experience worth living.

8. Roman Forum

Roman Forum is located in a square in front of the Church of St. Donatus in the center of Zadar Old Town. The Roman Forum was built in the 1st century BC - 3rd century AD and is the tallest Roman building of its kind in Croatia. It occupies an area of 45 times 90 square meters. It is another attraction in Zadar.

9. The pillar of shame

Pillar of Shame is near St. Donat's Church in Croatian Square. It was a place where people were severely punished if they committed transgressions by being tied up, whipped and publicly mocked. It was a violent spectacle designed to show participants what happens to criminals.

10. St. Donatus Church

St. Donatus Church is a Roman Catholic religious monument, built in the 9th century AD, founded by Donatus of Zadar. The architectural style is pre-Romanesque.

11. Zadar land gate

Land gate is also the most spectacular gateway to the Old Town of Zadar through the city wall. It is also the main gateway to the city by land, from the mainland, without crossing any bridges or bays. It was built in the form of a triumphal arch in Renaissance style in 1543 by the Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli. Nearby is the port Pitfor boats and small yachts.

Conclusion

Zadar is one of Croatia's pearls. The Old Town is by far the center of tourists' attention. Its highlights are Sun Salutation and Sea Organ.

17 km from Zadar you can visit old town Nin and you can sunbathe at Regina Beachone of the few sandy beaches in Croatia.
