About Miercurea Ciuc

Miercurea Ciuc is the county seat municipality of the county Harghita. The Transylvanian city, situated on the Olt river, is the smallest county seat in Romania. Its Hungarian name is Csikszereda and the German name is Szeklerburg. The first documentary evidence comes from 1558 and is found in a letter referring to the fairs held here in Csikszereda.

The area situated between the Ciucului Mountains and the Harghita Mountains is also known as the cold pole of our country.

Population: about 39.000 inhabitants, of which about 75% Hungarians of the Roman-Catholic confession, 15% Romanian Orthodox

We start our walk in the pedestrian area of Petofi Sandor Street.

1. National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians

Address: 23 Petofi Sandor Street

He just happened to catch my eye. I knew him in Sfantu Gheorghe. But here he is National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians and in Miercurea Ciuc, in a pedestrian area, on the edge of Majlath Gusztav Karoly Square. It hosts Oltului and Upper Mures Museum.

Following Petofi Sandor street is Marton Aron street. After almost 1 km we reach

At the intersection of Marton Aron Street and Szek Street, with entrances from both streets, there is a grand building. The magnificent palace is the seat Marton Aron National High School. The building erected at the beginning of the 20th century is declared historical monument, is in my opinion the most beautiful building in the city.

We enter on Szek street and we go uphill for 2 km.

3. Reformed Basilica Șumuleu Ciuc

Address: 148 Szek Street

Under Franciscan Monastery to be found Catholic Church built in the 18th - 19th centuries in baroque style. Although somewhat out of town, it is one of the pit stops worth making.

The monastic complex is located on Virgin Mary WayEuropean pilgrimage route, which connects Marian shrines ("linked to St. Mary") on routes in Austria, Poland, Hungary, Bosnia Herzegovina and Romania, including the Cârța Abbey (SB). The path is marked on the sidewalk of the street leading to it.

We follow Calea Mariei, which we also came by, before Lunca Mare street, from where we have a perspective on Harghita Mountains.

We go around the cozy sports arena of the Csikszereda club. We found in Miercurea Ciuc a clean city with lots of flowers and small and big parks.

Following Timisoarei Boulevard we cross a wider artery, Kossuth Lajos Street, and from here we enter again in the pedestrian area.

4. Liberty Square

We are in Liberty Squarea beautiful, wide, lively area. Around it are the Nagy Istvan Art High School, the County Council and the Prefecture and other institutions. Next to Sapientia University we arrive in Center at Kozponti Park, where we note Statue of the Unknown Soldier on the Timisoara Boulevard side of this nicer park, where you can find good parking.

Timisoara Boulevard rises slightly in Citadel Squarewhere 4 streets converge, near Episcopal Cathedral of Covasna and Harghita.

5. Miko Fortress

Address: Piața Piața Cetății 2

Miko Fortress belongs to the Late Renaissance style. Francis Miko is the builder of the 17th-century edifice. He is considered flagship objective of the city. Here is open Szekler Szekler Museum.

Ratings

Miercurea Ciuc is modest from a tourist point of view. The few attractions are not promoted. The town's emblem is the Miko Fortress.

Visit Harghita county and the town of Toplițawhere the Mesothermal Waterfall, Urmanczy Castle and St. Elias Monastery are located.
