Izmir, Turkey Travel Guide

An attractive Turkish metropolis

About Izmir

The metropolis of Izmir is located in the southwest of Turkey, in the Gulf of Izmir and is a port on the Aegean Sea. Administratively, the city of Izmir is part of Izmir Province. The metropolitan area covers over 7,000 kmp, and strictly the city ca. 900 kmp. With 3 million inhabitants it is Turkey's third most populous city after the two capitals Istanbul and Ankara. Izmir developed on the former Greek city of Smyrna. It has belonged to Turkey since 1922. It is a city with a modern infrastructure, served both by an airport and several harbors and boat docking stations.

History in brief

The region has been populated since prehistoric times. Archaeological remains prove that people have been living here since the 7th millennium BC. The Greek fortress of Smyrna (11th century BC) once stood on these sites. It later came under Roman occupation and was rebuilt by Alexander the Great. Since the 15th century the Ottoman Empire has administered these lands. In modern history, the Republic of Turkey, founded by Atatürk almost 100 years ago, has opened up to the western world and has renounced some religious canons and restrictions, women have obtained rights and have equal status with men, and Turks have or can have broad horizons. The doubling of the country's population has not led to poverty, even if there are extremes in Turkey, and this is because Turkey has developed fantastically in the last 30 years, and not only in the tourism industry. Atatürk is indisputably the symbol of modern Turkey.

The fascination of Izmir

Izmir fascinates with its beautiful bay of the same name, around which the city stretches along the Aegean Sea and the surrounding hills. The waterfront invites you to stroll or relax. The green spaces are well integrated between older and newer blocks and houses. The Velvet Fortress can be seen on the hill, and close to the center are the ruins of the ancient city of Smyrna. The historic elevator is an engineering masterpiece. The bazaar is the unmistakable local footprint. The most visited tourist spot is Konak Square, home to the Clock Tower and the Yali Mosque. I invite you to visit this fascinating city.

1. Konak Square / Clock Tower / Yali Mosque

The center of Izmir and the pole of tourist density is the Konak district, where the Konak Square (Meydani). The square is named after the Vali Konagı (İzmir Provincial Governor's Mansion), which is located here. Konak Square is the absolute center of Izmir. It has a square shape, on one side being the mentioned mansion and the Town Hall. The square is populated with pigeons, which come in large numbers to be fed by passers-by. On one side of the square is a very beautiful fountain. Also here are two other sights: the Clock Tower and the Yali Mosque.

In the center of the square is the symbol of Izmir, Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi), built in 1901. The monument was designed by the Frenchman Raymond Charles Père and commemorated the 25th anniversary of Abdulhamid II's accession to the throne. The clock was a gift from the German Emperor Wilhelm II. The building is built and decorated in the Ottoman style. The tower is 25 meters high and surrounded by four circular fountains. The column of the tower is of Moorish inspiration. Izmir's clock tower was also featured on the 500-pound note, which circulated for 6 years in the last century.

At the exit to the bazaar is Konak Mosque (Yali). We visited it quickly as it is a small and simple place of worship. It was built in 1748 by Ayse Hanim. It is built in an octagonal plan and has only one room. You have to take your shoes off at the entrance.

Near Fevzi Pasha Boulevard we entered the bazaar (kemeralti). The bazaar is one of the emblems of Turkish trade. In the bazaar you can say you can find everything, but that's not really true. The abundance and diversity of products, the competition between vendors and the Turkish bargaining spirit give color to the place. In one area of the bazaar Kizlaragasi Inn, which is nothing but a covered bazaar in the shape of a maze of halls.
