1. Tourist Info Center

Welcome to Giurgiu!

In Giurgiu I noticed a contradiction. Although it has a tourist info center very well set up in terms of information provided, the objectives themselves are not highlighted.

Start your visit in Giurgiu at Tourist Information and Promotion Center located in Mihai Viteazul Park. A nice lady opened the door for me a few minutes before the opening time. In the center I found lots of maps and information, including from many other areas of the country. I also noticed a nice corner with folk costumes.

From the Tourist Information Center we head south, on the main artery of the city, passing the Mihai Viteazul Park, where there is the equestrian statue of the one who was the liberator of the city in 1595.

3. Clock Tower

Address: Mircea cel Batran Street / Unirii Square

We keep going in the direction of travel until Clock Tower or the Clock Tower.

It dates back to the 18th century, when the county was occupied by the Turks, who were also the builders of the objective - a 22-meter-high gazebo, serving as an observation tower. The clock tower was added after the territories were liberated from the Ottomans. It is a historical monument and is symbol of Giurgiu, being part of the coat of arms of the county.

From the tower several streets start radially, which attests that the tower was a kind of kilometer 0 of the city. At least this symbol should look impeccable.

In front of the Clock Tower, but on the other sidewalk is Tudor Vianu Theater.

5. "Nicolae Bălănescu" Athenaeum

Address: 21 Episcopiei Street

Take the 45-degree left, past Diocese of Giurgi to admire a beautiful construction - Nicolae Bălănescu Athenaeum. It looks like a Greek temple. On the facade is the Roman eagle. It was built in 1940 by the philanthropic gesture of the lawyer Balanescu on the site of his former house that he demolished to build the Athenaeum.

We follow the same street, which takes a half right turn, and then Rue Parcului, to pass by Apollo Statue yes Bust of Aristide Poulopoulos, where to my appreciation I found QR codes that allowed you to find out information.

7. Park Alei

Address: 36 Mircea cel Batran Street

Vis-à-vis the museum is Park Alei or Garden of the Allei, an old park founded in 1831, quite small, in the middle of which stands Heroes' Alley where there are 23 bronze busts of heroes from the Revolutionary War and Heroes' Monument and in an alley The bandstand. On a plinth at the corner exit is raised Bust of Mihai Eminescu

8. Bizetz Bridge

Bizetz Bridge reminds me of the old Grant Bridge in Bucharest. It's the work of engineers Anghel Saligny yes Ion-Ionescu Bizetz.

The bridge crosses the Sfantu Gheorghe Canal. It was put into service in 1905 as a road and railroad bridge, the only curved bridge in Europe at that time. In tests, as a proof of trust, engineers stood in a boat under the bridge.

Today it can only be crossed per pedes.

9. Giurgiu Port Captain's Office (The Palace of the River Station)

From the Bizetz Bridge we go for 2 km through a really unkempt area near Shipyard yes Zonal Captaincy until Port of Giurgiuwhere the building is obviously located Port Captaincy or The River Station Palace.

Across the Danube, the neighboring city's blocks are rising Ruse. On the Danube are anchored at the quay several ships, which are restaurants. The Capitania looks better from a distance, but as we get closer, the signs of age of the building stand out. We admire the Danube before returning to the city.

The return to the canal is along the same route, this time crossing the Bridge of Hope, parallel to Bizetz Bridge.

10. Giurgiu Fortress

Address: rue Digului

Giurgiului Fortress or Fortress of Mircea the Elder is a ruin, but several thick walls or fragments of walls are still standing after centuries, even if overgrown with weeds. And again surprising by contrast, if the walls lie in ruin and without a landscaped access route to them, we have instead the QR code plaque on the road near the bridge.

Final impressions

Perhaps I should have mentioned the well-known Friendship Bridge, which crosses the Danube from Giurgiu to Ruse in neighboring Bulgaria. Being a border crossing point over the river, I don't think it is visited as a tourist attraction, although it is undeniably an engineering achievement.

Giurgiu - contrasts. This is the impression I was left with. From some laudable efforts regarding information and documentation to the lack of care for the maintenance and highlighting of tourist attractions.

All the best!
