1. The enclosure wall

The address is on Ferdinand Boulevard.

We follow a loop route shown in the map above that includes most of the sights of the city located in the Center area, in the Peninsula. We have not included here the Dolphinarium / Planetarium and the Mamaia resort.

The enclosure wall of the Tomis Fortress is longer, but the most famous and interesting access point is the one in front of the three gates of the North Gate and the bust of Vasile Parvan. The wall was built in the sec. III and is part of the Museum of History and Archaeology of Constanta, located in the City Hall Park, in the open air. Tomis Fortress was built during the Roman rule.

The minaret of the mosque rises above the surrounding fences. The mosque was built by Sultan Abdulaziz in the 19th century. It is made of hewn stone.
In the pedestrian area of the Peninsula, where we are, there are many terraces, and in the evening the area is lively with people taking a stroll to the harbor.

The address is 2 Constantin A. Rosetti Street.

Unfortunately, this mosaic place of worship is permanently closed and is ruining every day. A conservation and renovation work at least of the exterior would be welcome.

7. Constanta Maritime Port

For a few years, partial access has been allowed in the seaport, where there is also a large parking lot for tourists, and the double-decker bus has a route that leads to the Constanta Port Museum and the Queen's Nest, one of the places where Queen Mary used to retire to admire the sea. Sometimes you can go even further, through the military harbor, to the White Lighthouse, on the northern pier. Did you know about these places?

10. The Black Sea and the waterfront

We go down by the statue of Queen Elizabeth, a.k.a. the poet Carmen Silva, who loved the Black Sea so much.
We continue our walk on the Black Sea Cliff, among the fishermen, looking at the stabilopods brought to protect the shore, at the almost non-existent waves of the sea.

11. Casino

The address is 4 Queen Elisabeth Boulevard.

The waterfront draws our eyes and especially our steps towards the Casino. Oh! The symbol of Constanta - the Casino has been struggling for years to become beautiful again, to look good in pictures. After many years of ruin and stagnation, some work is happening there. I had the chance one year to visit it in the ruined state and it hurt my chest. I used to take so many pictures of the casino alive as a kid. There wasn't a tourist who didn't take pictures of this architectural masterpiece or buy pictures of the Casino. The Casino was built in the years 1909 - 1910 and was .... a famous casino, but also organized balls and shows.

12. Aquarium

The address is 1 Queen Elisabeth Boulevard.

It is open daily from 9am - 8pm

Opposite the Casino is the Aquarium, which together with the Dolphinarium and the Planetarium and the Microrepository is part of the Natural Science Museum Complex. The Dolphinarium and Planetarium are located at Bd. Mamaia 255.

The aquarium is named after Prof. Ion Borcea. The building was built in 1955. It has over 2,000 marine animals of about 60 species and is crowded in summer by children on vacation at the sea. Although not large and not modernized to the level of our years, it remains an important point of attraction of the city, located on the Black Sea coast.

13. Casino Cliff

The waterfront offers several angles of view of the sea, of the ships in the open sea or of smaller boats in the nearer plane. This is where lovers, families and tourists take many pictures. I really like two monuments on the upper cliff in the Casino Park, namely a fountain and the Monument of the Roman Sailors.

14. Genovez Lighthouse and Eminescu Statue

The address is 12 Remus Opreanu Street.

Up, at the end of the upper alley of the cliff, where the road also makes a bigger curve is the Genovez Lighthouse, and close to it the Statue of Mihai Eminescu and Veronicau Micle, who look uninterruptedly at the sea, the double inspiration for our national poet.

I greet you from the cliff next to the former Naval Command building, another building in serious decay.

15. Tomis Tourist Port

The waterfront ends in the parking lot of the Tourist Port, where many visitors choose to have a meal or a drink at the terraces around the port. From this harbor, small boats, some private, some for pleasure cruises, go out in the waves and currents of the sea.

16. Carol I Mosque

The address is 1 Crangului Street.

can be visited daily between 9:30 am and 7 pm

From the harbor we climb a steep path past the ruins of a monumental hotel, what a pity, to choose the shortest way to the Carol I Mosque, whose minaret is a very good orientation landmark from a distance, considering that it is located 2 steps from Ovidiu Square, the city center. The mosque, built in 1910, is a popular attraction in Constanta, with a 360-degree panorama from the minaret's balcony. It is an active Muslim place of worship. The large carpet downstairs in the prayer hall is a valuable one, and the mosque is partially painted inside. It's one of my favorite places.

17. National Museum of History and Archaeology. Roman Mosaic Edifice.

The address is Ovidiu Square.

Open daily 9am - 7pm

A remarkable and very valuable museum of history and archaeology. Part of it is housed in the tall building in the square but exhibits can also be found outdoors around the building.

The highlight is the Roman Mosaic Edifice, part of the museum, but with separate access, which on our walk we saw from the back earlier in the day, here we have the possibility to enter the museum hall with the famous 2000 year old mosaic edifice.

18. Ovid's Square and the Statue of Ovidius Publius Naso

Ovid's Square is the center of the Old Town located in Pensinsula. In the center of the square is the statue of Ovid, more precisely of the ancient poet Publius Ovidius Ovidius Naso.

There are many restaurants and terraces in Ovidiu Square, as well as on the pedestrian streets that converge into it.

19. The Wind Wind Street

Via Mircea cel Batran street, slightly to the right in a smooth uphill we are heading towards a unique place that not many people know. Stradela Vantului is a narrow street, the narrowest street in Constanta.

You can go down, which I invite you to do, to the next less visited point ...

20. Villa Șutu

The address is Krikor H. Zambaccian Street.

At the end of the above-mentioned street is Villa Sutu, which tells the story of Constanta's Arab motifs. The villa belonged to Prince Sutu and was built in 1899. At one time it was opened as an art museum, now we found it closed and with the fear that it will also remain unmaintained or preserved.

21. Paleo-Christian hypogeous tomb at Tomis

This area of the old city center, situated above the sea in front of Modern and Neversea Beaches

... hides a place almost unknown, mysterious and about which I would have liked to know and see more. It is the hypogeum of the Paleochristian hypogeum at Tomis. In fact, there's a construction site in front of the tomb, obstructing visibility. I hope it's a construction site. It's an ancient tomb discovered under the ruins of Tomis, the paintings in it make it unique in our country. I hope the day will come when we can visit it.

22. Art Museum

The address is 82-84 Tomis Boulevard.

open from Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm

With a curiosity left unsatisfied, we close the proposed visit loop at the Art Museum.

From here to the starting point at the enclosure wall are a few dozen steps.

Ratings and impressions

Constanta is a tourist city. A double-decker bus offers a city tour from Mamaia to the harbor and back. I concentrated the sights in the historical center, including some lesser known ones.

Constanta has a lot to present from a tourist perspective. It is not emphasized anywhere near the historical value that it has and it needs to come out on the tourist market with a wider offer, as it would have something to offer. Espero ca santierele de pe lang obiective sa contribui a aceasta, dar mai sunt multe locuri care se degradeza.

My favorite places in Constanta through which I have passed dozens of times are: the waterfront and the harbor, Geamia (Carol I), Ovidiu Square and Mozaiculum, the Dolphinarium and Planetarium. Be curious and visit the Queen's Nest and the Marine Museum or the Wind alley!

Visit Constanta!

All the best!
