About Călărași

Călărași is the county seat municipality of Calarasi county, located in southern Muntenia, on the left bank of the Borcea arm of the Danube. Calarasi can be reached by DN21 Calarasi - Slobozia - Braila, DN3B Calarasi - Fetesti and DN3 Bucharest - Calarasi - Constanta or on A2 Bucharest - Constanta, which passes 25 km north of the city. To Bucharest there are 130 km to be traveled by road in 2 hours.

The city is located at an average altitude of 13 mdm, spreads over 133 kmp and has about 65,000 inhabitants, of which more than 80% are Orthodox Romanians.

There is no Tourist Information Center in Calarasi.

1. Zoo / Dumbrava Park

Zoo of the city is located in Dumbrava Park. It can be visited from April to September daily from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, and from October to March it closes 2 hours earlier every day. It was opened in 1980. It is an important zoo with many species of animals such as lions, tigers, bears, llamas, zebras, camels, monkeys, Scottish cows, birds, reptiles and fish. The star is the hippopotamus.

We continue down the alleys Dumbrava Park, which we cross passing by a gazebo, a beach and a playground.

We cross DN3B, which goes down to the Danube ferry.

2. Central Park

We go in the direction we came and follow the left bank of the river and lake Jirlau, which flows into the Borcea Arm. The landscape is not very attractive until we reach the Central Parkright on the Danube. Opposite you can see a wide sandy beach called Mare Beach. Central Park is also called Big Park.

At the bend of the Danube, we change direction to the left to exit the park on Sloboziei St., then we turn left again on the second street.

3. Museum of Lower Danube

The address is 4 Progresul Street.

Visiting hours: daily from 10 am - 6 pm

Lower Danube Museum has two sections: archaeology - history and ethnography - art. The archaeology section exhibits pieces discovered in the area. It highlights the monetary treasures. In the ethnography section, weavings, handicrafts, household objects and pottery are presented.

Conclusions, impressions

Although Calarasi's location on the Danube could be exploited for tourism, it offers very little to its visitors. The Zoo, the 2 larger parks and the Museum of the Lower Danube are the objectives that can be highlighted.
