August von Spiess Hunting Museum Sibiu

Impressive collection of hunting trophies

Where? When?

The August von Spiess Hunting Museum is located in Sibiu, at 4 Școala de Înot Street, very close to the Unirii Square or to the entrance from the center on Calea Dumbrăvii (500 m).

It is open for visitors from Wednesday through Sunday from 9am to 5pm. Since we arrived just before closing time, we visited it in a hurry. I recommend you allow 30-60 minutes for a leisurely tour of this museum.

Who is August von Spiess?

August von Spiess gives the museum its name. He held the rank of colonel and was a huntsman of the Royal Household in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house, which houses the museum, was also the residence of August von Spiess and was donated in 1966 by his daughters for the purpose of today's museum.

What collections does the museum display?

The August von Spiess Hunting Museum presents over 1,600 exhibits. The museum is very well organized thematically and I will try to summarize this in the following presentation. Throughout my visit, I enjoyed a valuable, informative and passionate guide.

Why visit the Sibiu Hunting Museum?

It is a well-structured museum, where the guides introduce you very successfully into the world of hunters, even if you don't have this passion, as in my case. The museum is equally impressive for children and adults. I would love to visit it again.

1. Hunting weapons and tools

After entering, in the first room we find an overview of weapons from the Stone Age to the present day. We see simple and ancient weapons from the Paleolithic and Neolithic: spears, spears, bows, spears, bows, and more. We go from wired firearms to cartridge weapons.
