1. The Gate Bastion
The Gate Bastion is one of the most representative elements of the Medieval Fortress of Târgu Mureș, being the main access point to the fortification. Imposing and well-proportioned, the bastion was intended to control the entrance to the fortress and to protect the most vulnerable area in case of attack.
Built in the late Renaissance style, the Gate Bastion impresses with its massive arches, vaulted gate and stacked chambers once used for guard and surveillance. Above the entrance were the rooms of the guards, where documents and weapons were kept, and the narrow openings in the walls allowed effective defense in critical moments.
Today, the Bastion of the Gate is one of the most photographed places in the fortress and offers visitors an authentic glimpse of how urban defense was organized in Transylvania in the 16th-17th centuries. Restored and harmoniously integrated into the historical ensemble, the bastion welcomes tourists with a special medieval atmosphere, marking the entrance into a space steeped in history.
