Rodnei Ridge 1/5

Borșa Pietroasa Monastery (975) - Iezer Weather Station / camping site (1780)

Access

Rodnei Ridge 1/5. The access to the ridge trail of the Rodna Mountains was from Borșa, Maramureș county. It goes up to the end of Gîrlei street where there is the Borșa Pietroasa Monastery, next to which you can park for free in a generous parking lot. This is the most frequented access route to the highest peak of the massif, Vârpe Pietrosul Rodnei (2303 meters above sea level). According to the signpost next to the hermitage, the ascent to the summit takes 4 hours, an overestimated time for an average speed of ascent. From the start, the route enters the Rodna Mountains National Park.

About day 1/5

On the first day of the hike we only set out to climb from Borșa to the camping site near the Iezer Weather Station, from where the next day we will climb the ridge and the peak of Pietrosul Rodnei.

1. Borșa Pietroasa Monastery (975 m) - Iezer Weather Station / camping site (1780 m)

3 hours / 6 km / medium / blue stripe

The trail climbs along a forest road, which starts near the Borșa Pietroasa Monastery, and slowly climbs through the forest, past blueberry bushes. In order to reduce the slope, there are some meanders and short cuts at some points. At the top of the forest there is a good water spring right in the path. We covered 2 hours and 40 minutes from the start. At the end there are a couple of viewpoints to Borșa and the Maramureș Mountains, and then we enjoy the appearance of the Iezer Weather Station. At the metep station we appreciated the hospitality of the cabanier who welcomed us warmly and served us hot forest herbal teas. A few minutes further up, past the jnepeni, is the permitted camping site on the banks of the Pietrosul stream. Here we camp in the tent in windy conditions and only a few degrees in the thermometers
