Butchers' Bastion in Baia Mare is located at 2 Izvoarelor Street, near Izvoarelor Square. You can visit from Monday to Friday between 8:30-16:00. The full ticket costs 5 RON and the reduced ticket 1 RON. There are also tickets that allow you to visit several sights in Baia Mare and defend the city's southern gate.

 

 

About the Butchers' Bastion in Baia Mare

Butchers' Bastion in Baia Mare is classified as historical monument. It was built in the 15th century.In 1469 the king of Hungary, Matthias Corvinus Corvinus granted Baia Mare the privilege to build defense walls. Butchers Bastion is one of the 7 towers of Baia Mare.

1. Butchers' Tower

The stone walls of the tower are 1 meter thick and have a circular shape with two floors. Ammunition was stored on the first vaulted storey and on the second storey there are ramparts, hollows in the wall. The outlaw Pintea Viteazul was shot near the Butchers' Bastion in 1703 during the anti-Hapsburg uprising. The interior of the tower is empty and poor in exhibits and information.
