Walking in Gunzenhausen

About Gunzenhausen

Gunzenhausen is such a peaceful and pleasant place, that I thought I would share with you a little bit about it. First something from the wiki source and something from me. Gunzenhausen is a resort in northwest Bavaria. It's not the kind of rowdy resort like many places in Romania. Here you listen to the silence and recharge your batteries on the banks of the Altmuehlsee lake or along the Altmuehl river or in the historic center. It's a town with less than 17,000 inhabitants and situated at an altitude of 400 meters.

1. Spitalkirche

We start at Spitalkirche (Church of the Hospital or of the Holy Spirit), located on Spitalstrasse 8. It was built in 1352 by the Knight Burkkard von Seckendorff and later rebuilt in Baroque style. On the outside façade is a fresco showing what the hospital complex looked like in 1728. You will slightly notice the yellow silhouette of the church.

2. Blasturm

The next stop is at another sight you will notice because of its height, Blasturm (probably the wind players' tower). It, built in the 15th century, is part of the fortification of the citadel. It takes its name from the fact that the chief musician of the town and his chapel used to sing church songs from this tower on feast days.

3. Rathaus

We go through the gangway under the Blasturm (open to car traffic) on the other side and reach the Tourist Info Centerlocated in the same building as the town museum. From here guided tours of Gunzenhausen are organized according to a posted program.

The streets are paved with stone, vehicles circulate at under 30 km/h, without exception, it is a pleasure to walk here. There are many baroque buildings in the area, each more and more beautiful. The street leads to the Marktplatz. Here we find Rathaus (Town Hall), a 2-storey building, painted in yellow.

4. Marktplatz, historic center

We follow the direction to the left and enter the "Piata" (MarktplatzHere is the historical center. I noticed a tall mast with the coats of arms of the various administrative subdivisions and near it a tall clock with rotating figures with many many bells that I caught in the exercise of its function at the exact time. We continue among the superb perfect buildings which do not reveal their age at first sight, only the baroque style betrays the years they bear.

5. Faeberturm, Weissenburger Tor

The street then leads us under some colored shadows to the next tall landmark Faeberturm (Painters' Tower). It was erected around 1300 and is also part of the fortress fortification together with a third tower (Storchenturm, of the storks), which we have not visited. The painters' tower is also called the thieves' tower and was an integral part of the Weissenburger Tor (gate of the white fortress) - destroyed and symbolically rebuilt behind the tower.

6. Evangelische Stadtkirche

The Evangelische Stadtkirche (Evangelische Stadtkirche) can be found on the small street to the left before Faeberturm. The massive 15th-century Gothic church is built from an original Roman building on the site of a former Roman castle.

From here we go back through the Marktplatz from where we started, admiring more and more baroque buildings.

7. Altmuehlsee Trail

It's a 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 km walk, depending on how long you want to walk. Altmuehlsee means the Lake of the Old Moors. It is a paradise for people who want to retreat in a quiet place in nature but especially for birds and animals as it is a protected area.

The lake is 2 km northwest of Gunzenhausen. You can find it easily by following the map or by following the Altmuehl. There is both a bike path and a footpath. You can also do it by car, but it's really worth the walk maybe you will meet the birds and animals that I met and maybe even many others.

For access per pedes, I recommend starting from behind the Hotel Adlerbraeu at Freundschaftsbruecke (Friendship Bridge), a cycle and foot bridge crossing the river Altmuehl, then along the river to the dam, under the 3 bridges where the paved bike path leads first, then the forest road through the meadows.

8. Hirteninsel

After the dam, to the right of the dam in the direction of flow of the river, there is a parking lot and a paved driveway that probably encircles the entire lake. From this one leads out to several places to stop or to the boat stations, which are simple, rustic. I walked to Hirteninsel (Shepherds Island) connected by an isthmus to the mainland. Dogs are not allowed on the island as it is a paradise for geese. There are also swans and ducks, but the stars are the geese, huge geese approaching the size of swans. The route around the lake is 12 kilometers.

with the exception of bio debris from geese and other birds. In this natural protected area live 300 different species of birds, and the arrival / departure of migratory birds is an event worth marking in this place.

Conclusion

Nice, clean, quiet, quiet, eco, cool Gunzenhausen. The historic center looks beautiful, and a stroll to Altmuehlsee will recharge your batteries.

All the best!
