Sâmbăta de Jos Stud Farm, Brasov

Horses will enjoy being fed apples and carrots

Location and access

After visiting the Fortified Evangelical Church of Cincsor we traveled to Herghelia Sambata de Jos. There are only 5 km to go. The Herghelia is located on strada Principala nr. 45 in the village of Sambata de Jos, commune of Voila, Brasov county. From the DN1 Brasov - Sibiu, in Sambata de Jos, turn left as you come from Brasov on the DJ105B, which goes to the Sambata resort, and 500 meters after the exit from the national road, park on the right in front of the entrance to the herd.

From Brasov it is 80 km in 1.5 hours by road and 70 km in 1 hour from Sibiu. The nearest train station is Voila, 2 km away.

History

- 1874 - the Lipitani herd of Lipitani horses from Lipica (Slovenia) was founded
- 1913 - the herd was moved to Babolna (Hungary) because of the First World War
- 1920 - the Sambata de Jos herd is re-established with 3 stallions and 22 mares
- Today it is managed by Romsilva and the domain includes the Brukenthal Castle, 18th century, an architectural monument, in disrepair (we learn that there will be money for renovation and putting the castle back in the tourist circuit)

1. The Lipizzan breed

A wide side alley leads from the main street to the entrance. We pay and have the joy of being partially accompanied on our visit by the lady from the ticket office. We tell her we are coming here for the third time and that we love this place. And that we also have some apples for the horses.

At the first crossroads we find some signposts. We head towards the stallion stables in Lipitan breed. The aim of this stud is to improve the genetic material of this breed. The horses here participate in competitions and events. The Lipitan breed is used in the world's great dressage schools. Here at Sambata, it has several families or bloodlines, named after the breeders who formed them: Conversano, Favory, Maestoso, Neapolitano, Pluto, Siglavy-Capriola and Tulipan.

I have taken numerous pictures of the horses and fed them apples. They are generally friendly if you know how to approach them. You should avoid sudden movements and standing on the right hind hoof. The family and sex of the housed horse are listed on each stall. Feed Saturday horses apples and carrots when you visit! This is allowed in the presence of a representative from the Stud.

2. Museum, carriage, racecourse

Children also participated in feeding and feeding the horses with apples and enjoyed these moments.

After the stallions' stables, further on, there is a museum (an exhibition) with horse accessories, such as harnesses, saddles, helmets, etc., but also trophies won by the horses at Sambata and some lyrics that caught my attention.

In front of the museum there is a scenery trail. Return to the intersection mentioned at the beginning. Here we can follow the road to the left, which we found muddy. It leads to other stables (not visible, of rabbits) and to the training base.

Conclusion

Sâmbăta de Jos Stud Farm is another objective worth checking off. We have returned to the horses of Sambata several times because we loved this place and them ... the stallion horses. Visiting the horses soothes you and gets you energized. We spent about three quarters of an hour at the Sambata horses.

We are in an area full of tourist attractions. We are at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains, close to the Fagaras Fortress, the Fortified Church of Cincsor, the Sambata Resort, the Brancoveanu Monastery of Sambata de Sus, the Dragus Adventure Park, the Cistercian Abbey of Carta. You can organize excursions on the Transfagarasan or hiking on the Sambetei Valley to Sambata and Podragu Hut or the former Arpas Hut with its true story about Fata Padurii.

Visit City of Sibiu, city of Brasov, Fortified Church Cincșor, town of Codlea, The Shona Mounds, Făgăraș Fortress.

All the best!
