Where is it, when to visit, how much does it cost?

Memorial Prison Pitesti is located at 30 Negru Voda Street in Pitesti. The museum is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11-18. Full admission costs 20 lei. Children aged 12-18 pay half-price, and children under 12 have access only to the area called Museum of Communism for Childreni.

Memorial Prison Pitesti is a unique museum located in the former prison in Pitesti, where the The Pitesti Phenomenon or Experiment during Romania's communist period. The prison cells house exhibitions, art works, a library and a chapel.

1. Ground floor 1

To the left of the entrance, on the ground floor, there are rooms displaying tabs from communist history of Romania. We read about important personalities of the democratic world, such as Iuliu Maniu, about the historical parties, the liberal and the peasant, the occupation of Romania by the Red Army, collectivization and the establishment of communism. To the right of the entrance is Museum of Communism for Children.

2. Basement

In the footer is presented Pitesti Phenomenon Exhibition. The Pitești Phenomenon was an experiment in the re-education of prisoners consisting in the psychological destruction of the individual. The conditions in the cells, the bathroom and the torture methods used are presented.

3. Floor

Upstairs is Correction Section. There were cells for prisoners deprived of less than 7 years to those imprisoned for more than 25 years or for life. Representatives of the resistance movement imprisoned in Pitesti are remembered.

4. Ground Floor 2

We return to another area of the ground floor where the cells of the common prisoners were. We read about the Dej and Ceausescu regimes.
