About the Fortress Towers in Sibiu

The location of Sibiu on the eastern border of the Hungarian kingdom led to the concentration of war technology in the fortress and its fortification with 3 belts and towers for the defense of the fortress. On the newest line of fortifications, the outer or 3rd line, 3 of the towers of the citadel's defenses have been preserved in good condition. They are The Tower of the Archbusiers, the Tower of the Olarilors and the Tower of the Dulgherilors, all located on Citadel Street. The last 2 are also open to visitors, together with the connecting passage (balcony) between them. In Sibiu the craftsmen's guilds played a role in the history of the citadel and gave their names to the towers. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Sibiu was one of the most important craft centers in Transylvania. Each guild was headed by a staroste, who led the assemblies, kept the seal and the keys to the guild chest and represented the guild. In 1750, Sibiu was home to the largest number of guilds (40), trades and craftsmen.
